Nia Suardiaz, seven-times world champion of wingfoil, has been the invited star in the presentation of the 2025 Ibiza Wingfoil Open Spain’s Cup, which took place yesterday afternoon, Thursday October 2nd, in the social room of Club Nàutic Sant Antoni. The young athlete from Tarifa, has been interviewed by insular councillor of Sports, Salvador Losa; councillor of Sports of Sant Antoni, Daniel Sánchez, and commodore of CNSA, Javier Planas, and has answered some questions about her training and her passion for this sport, which have been asked by sports directors of the CNSA, Enrique Mas.

Suardiaz is world champion in diverse specialties of wingfoil, such as Freestyle or Wave. To the trophy have come Catalan residing in Grand Canary, Mar de Arce, and slow Canaries Jeremy Rodríguez and Ancor Yone Sosa, all of them also maximum aspirers to obtain the victory. The competition, which will be of the Race modality, will start this Friday, at 3 p.m., while on Saturday it will continue at 12 a.m. and on Sunday at 11 a.m. Eight daily races are expected, with a duration of 10 minutes each.

On Friday and Saturday the qualifying journey will be celebrated and on Sunday the final race will take place, to which half the competitors will access. The awards ceremony will also be on Sunday, in the village of the competition that has been placed in the main deck of the CNSA, from 4:30 p.m. onwards.

During the presentation, Nia Suardiaz has explained that she started practicing windsurfing with her parents and brother, and that, by friends’ recommendation, she began practicing wingfoil. “At the start it was all for fun and trying to be at sea the maximum time possible”. However, to reach world championships, “physical training outside water is essential”. The athlete participated last year in 18 competitions, so she spends all year traveling, and the title that moved her the most was Wingfoil’s World Championship in the Wave modality, recently conquered in South Africa.

Last year, the IWO passed the participation record, with 70 registries, and this year it has reached the same numbers, the maximum it can aspire to. Unlike other tests of the circuit, that start from the open beaches bays, in the bay of Portmany competitors will move to the best area in terms of wind in a touristic ferry. At least 10 knots of wind are required for athletes to start and rise up, as it’s explained by Enrique Mas during the presentation. Those 70 participants and teams form the maximum people that can host the boat that is used for the race. Despite the limitation, Ibiza is the most multitudinous date of all the national circuit of wingfoil, which has had four trophies this year, including the Ibizan one.

The Club Nàutic Sant Antoni, which organizes the event alongside the Royal Spanish Sailing Federation, has been boosting this modality and carrying out multiple activities of training and regattas for some years. The new nautical centre, that the entity has inaugurated in 2026, will be a reference spot in the island, in which it will keep boosting this and other wind sports. The race has the sponsorship of Ibiza’s Insular Council, Café del Mar and Balearia.
