The institutional location of the Autoridad Portuaria de Baleares (APB) in the port of Palma hosted this Monday, September 8th, the Mallorca International Blue Marine Talks 2025, organized alongside by the National Electrical Boats Association (ANBE). A journey dedicated to marine decarbonization and sustainable nautical tourism, which has reunited international experts, institutional representatives and pioneering companies in blue innovation.

Within the framework of the event, APB Director Toni Ginard announced that, before the end of the year, a green hydrogen fuel cell will be inaugurated at the Port of Palma. This installation, part of the European Green Hysland project, will supply clean energy to Maritime Station No. 4.

Ginard also emphasized the promotion of quay electrification (OPS, Onshore Power Supply), which already has its first operational point in Palma for ferries and fast ferries at the Poniente docks. The APB is working to extend this system to more quays in Palma and to the general interest ports of Eivissa, Maó, Alcúdia, and La Savina. This system allows vessels to connect to the electrical grid while in port and turn off auxiliary engines, drastically reducing CO₂ emissions, particulate matter, and noise. “This represents a true paradigm shift towards the decarbonization of port operations,” highlighted Ginard.

The Mallorca International Blue Marine Talks 2025 has made Mallorca the international epicenter of sustainable boating, with participation from leading institutions, associations, and companies discussing the challenges and opportunities of the energy transition in the maritime sector. Speakers from Switzerland, Germany, Austria, and Spain shared experiences on port electrification, electric marine mobility, and fleet retrofitting.

During the event, the APB also reaffirmed its commitment to sustainable mobility, consolidating the nautical bus service in Eivissa, which was put out to public tender last June for a 15-year period. Likewise, a new public tender is underway to manage a new nautical bus service in Palma, which will feature at least three lines to improve mobility and reduce road traffic in the port area.

The APB Director also recalled the renewal of environmental best-practice agreements with operators of marinas such as Alcudiamar, Club de Mar, and Marina La Savina.

He also highlighted projects promoting marine biodiversity on the breakwaters of Portitxol and Molinar, where construction techniques are applied to regenerate marine habitats, as well as the recent ban on open-circuit systems on docked vessels, a key measure to improve water quality.

“We are not talking about isolated actions, but an integrated strategy that combines innovation, public-private collaboration, and environmental awareness,” concluded Ginard.

With this portfolio of projects, the APB strengthens its leadership in the energy transition and its role as an international benchmark in building a cleaner, more competitive, and sustainable port model.
