The Government of the Balearic Islands has signed the Manifesto for the Defense of the Spanish Coastline and its Responsible Management, a document that reports the lack of state investments and the need of a coordinated action between administrations.

The sign has been produced inside the mark of the sessions “La Ley de Costas Estatal desde una Perspectiva Autonómica”, organized by the Generalitat Valenciana through its Directorate General of Coasts, Ports and Airports, which have gathered representatives of the Canary Islands, Galicia, Andalusia, Murcia’s Region, Valencian Community and the Balearics in Valencia.

The encounter has served to share experiences, common challenges and suggestions that allow advancing towards a more efficient coastline management, with adequate resources, well defined competences and real cooperation between autonomic and State communities.

The Government has reminded that the relocation of competences regarding the management of the coastline in the Balearics, was carried out without the provision of human resources or the economic necessities to manage efficiently the over 1.500 kilometres of coastline of the archipelago.

It has also warned of the lack of economic compensation for the derived investments of the public maritime-land dominion canon, which the State keeps raising, as well as the necessity of clarifying the administrative functions to avoid competence overlaps that slow down the procedures.

In this context, they have presented the draft of the Ordination and Integral Management Law of the Balearics Coastline, encouraged by the Sea and Water Cycle Council. This law will establish its own legal mark, adapted to the insular reality, with the aim to organize the uses of the coast, protect its patrimony and guarantee its sustainability in the long term.

The Government reaffirms its commitment with responsible coast management, adapted to the effects of climate change and coherent with the identity and singularity of the territory. In this sense, they reaffirm their disposition to collaborate with other autonomic communities and with the State to go forward a more efficient, fair and sustainable governance model for the Balearic Islands.
