The Balearic Islands’ Government has initiated a strategic and disruptive project regarding the archipelago's coast management: the creation of a digital twin of the coastal reality. This tool, based on emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence and date analysis, forms part of the TriRuralTech program and is registered inside the Recuperation, Transformation and Resilience Plan (PRTR), funded with Next Generation European funds.

With a total budget of 4,6 millions of euros, of which the 75% come from European funds, the project is expected to use a technological infrastructure that allows simulating and monitoring different environmental and social scenarios of the Balearic coast in real time. Those digital twins will represent real environments digitally to improve the decision taking, optimize resources and benefit a more sustainable tourism.

The project relies on three main components: the creations of an interoperable data space, that will allow sharing information between administrations, companies, investigation centres and the civilization, guaranteeing security and the autonomy of the data; a knowledge coverage  to process and analyze the data in real time, generating useful knowledge for public management; and the main platform of the digital twin, since where scenarios will be seen and simulated to anticipated problems, prioritize investments and adjust public services such as gaugings or water cycles.

During 2025, two use cases will be developed: the management of gaugings at beaches and the water cycle management in coastal areas. From 2026 onwards, with their own funds, a third step will be added: the integral management of security and medical assistance to the coast.

The project, led by the Innovation General Direction and Digital Transformation, will be divided in three phases: one of preparation, one of execution and a third one of transference and consolidation.

This project will place the Balearic Islands in the European forefront of territorial digitalization. In addition to improving coastal management, the initiative wants to be a catalyst for technological entrepreneurship in rural and marine areas, creating synergies between the public and private fields.

With this bid for innovation and sustainability, the Government pretends having intelligent tools to face environmental, touristic and social challenges of the XXI century, benefitting from the European funds to transform public management and reinforce the digital ecosystem of the islands.
