The President of the Balearic Government, Margalida Prohens, together with the European Commissioner for Fisheries and Oceans, Costas Kadis; the Secretary General for Fisheries at the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, Maria Isabel Artime; the Mayor of Palma, Jaime Martínez; and the Regional Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and the Natural Environment, Joan Simonet, took part in the opening of the Conference on Fisheries, Insularity and Co-management, organised by the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and the Natural Environment at Es Baluard.

Through these technical sessions, the Government aims to address and highlight the impact of insularity on fishing activity, as well as to promote the co-management of fisheries resources in order to involve the sector directly in decisions that affect it.

Prohens conveyed to the European Commissioner for Fisheries and Oceans the need for insularity to be taken into account as a criterion in the future European regulation or aid mechanism for fisheries promoted by the European Commission. In this regard, she stressed that “insularity clearly conditions fishing activity in terms of costs, access to services, and dependence on supplies.”

She also defended the Government’s commitment to fisheries co-management, a model that “means listening to fishermen, recognising their knowledge, and involving them in the decisions that affect their daily work.”

The President also stated that “the Government of the Balearic Islands will continue to stand by the fishing sector, defending and conveying its demands both to the Government of Spain and at the European level, always working hand in hand with the sector to ensure the future of fishing in our islands.”
