The Government of the Balearic Islands has begun distributing the weather stations for the XarMet project to educational centers, a large school-based “citizen science” network that will allow students to learn using real data and strengthen the Smart Balearic Territory of the Balearic Islands.

The distribution of the stations has started with schools on the island of Mallorca, and during this week the equipment will be delivered to schools and secondary schools in Ibiza and Menorca. In Mallorca, a total of 11 schools are participating: CEIP Gabriel Palmer, IES Politècnic, CEIP Na Caragol, IES Calvià, IES Guillem Colom Casasnoves, IES s'Arenal, IES Puig de Sa Font, IES Binissalem, CIFP Escola Nauticopesquera, CEIP de Call Vermell, and CEIP Nou d’Alcúdia–CEIP Puig de Sant Martí. The delivery of the weather stations was accompanied by a short training session on how to install them, in an event attended by the Director of Functional Services and Institutional Support at IB Digital, Tomeu Amengual; the Vice-Rector for Scientific Policy and Research at the University of the Balearic Islands (UIB), Tomeu Homar; and IBSTEAM technician Tomeu Parets.

XarMet is a project of IB Digital and the Regional Ministry of Education and Universities, in collaboration with the UIB, which will deploy up to 100 weather stations in educational centers across the archipelago. The project has a twofold aim: for students to learn to interpret the world using real data, from their own school playgrounds, while at the same time generating useful environmental information to better understand the territory.

XarMet turns meteorology, temperature, wind, rain, and solar radiation, into a living learning tool. Thanks to these stations, students will be able to observe, compare, investigate, and explain environmental phenomena using real data, while practically developing key skills such as critical thinking, information analysis, applied mathematics, and the responsible use of technology.

In addition, the project is linked to outreach initiatives such as the UIB’s “Ciència per Tothom 2026” (“Science for Everyone 2026”), where participating students will present their work, share results, and show how science is learned best when it is touched, measured, and understood.

IB Digital is funding and driving this rollout as part of the Government’s strategy to build a Smart Territory: a model in which data helps to better understand the environment and make better public decisions, always with a direct impact on everyday life.

The project is coordinated by the Knowledge Space for a Smart Balearic Territory (Espai COTIB), with the support of CEP IBSTEAM and the collaboration of the UIB. This cooperation makes it possible to bring together educational, scientific, and technological capabilities in a single program, with a commitment to continuity and growth.
