Irati Vidal, Bruno Pons, Claudia Cook, and Marcos Pons performed at a high level at the Trasona reservoir in Asturias, placing themselves among the national elite with three medals and a fourth place that reflect the excellent work being done by the group coached by Dion López.
The gold went to Irati Vidal, in PK3, who competed well above her rivals with great seriousness and a promising margin for growth.
On Saturday, May 31st, Claudia Cook had an impressive heat and semifinal, and in the final she fought for every stroke until finishing in a meritorious fourth place, just two tenths of a second away from the bronze medal. A very ambitious performance ahead of the Spanish Championship.
Marcos Pons, who impressed in the heat, semifinal, and final, showed great form and ended up fighting for seventh place in the A final, despite suffering a setback during the race when he got tangled in some algae. Thus, he has broken into the national elite. On the other hand, Bruno Pons did not qualify for the final.
In the K2 event on Sunday, June 1st, Claudia and Irati made a splash with the best times in the semifinal and, in the final, fought hard to finish third and take home a highly applauded national bronze.
Conversely, Bruno and Marcos, in their first year as cadets, did not have their best day.
In the mixed category, Marcos and Claudia rowed with great authority, qualifying for the final despite being a year younger than their rivals, finishing second in the A final and earning the national silver medal. Bruno and Irati qualified for the B final after a very good heat, but the final was affected by rudder problems.
