The beaches of Palma will have more than 1.000 hammocks less between 2026 and 2029

The process of regression of the sandbanks has obliged the Town Hall of Palma to eliminate over a thousand hammocks and a kiosk for the new concession for the 2026-2029 years.

YOU HAVE ALL OF OUR FULL PROGRAMS HERE!This is how the mayor tennant and speaker of the Consistory, Mercedes Celeste, have announced it at the press release posterior to the Government's Board that took place on Wednesday, November 26th, in which she has been asked about the complaints of neighborhood entities due to the space excess that occupied some concessionaries.
The municipal representative has pointed out that the need of updating this contract is that, with the years passing by, there's been a decrease of sand and resting areas, so it was "necessary, redistributing them. "In all the beaches there has been a decrease of occupation, with a search of rationalization of space", she has pointed out.
The adjudication of this contract could last four more years and its distribution will be done by groups that will take diverse beaches of municipal type, with a base import of 3.5 million of euros tender.
In concrete, at cala Major the installation of 250 hammocks, 125 canopies and a kiosc will be allowed--before there were two--, at Can Pere Antoni 94 hammocks and 47 canopies --in this case the concession lasts until 2028--, at Ciutat Jardí 288 hammocks and 144 canopies, at cala Estància 132 hammocks and 66 canopies and at Playa de Palma 4.436 hammocks and 2.218 canopies.
In the contract it is established that the advantage of the exploitation of these temporary facilities in public spaces. The installation and withdrawal of elements such as the lifeguarding sheds, the points to ease accesibility to people with reduce mobility, posidonia, public bathrooms, changing rooms or sandbanks cleaning, amongst other aspects, will also be regulated.
In fact, at cala Estància the creation of an area with barriers for people with reduced movility, a central shadow and seats of 24 people maximum, is programmed.
In addition, the furniture and different elements to lend services in beaches will have to be available before the Palm Sunday and de dismantled before November 15th.
Contract clauses:
- 'App' to request and contract services: The contract contemplates the obligation of creating an app with which you can book the hammocks, canopies or recruitment of pedalaboats, kayaks and paddle surf items. This should be available for the 2027 season but the possibility of using it in 2026 will be valued. This way, it will have a web deisgn accessible from any kind of device with no need to install the 'app', with a location, prizes and availability identifying plan and allowing payments via email.
- Homogeneus and respectful aesthetic with the environment: Celeste has insisted on the materials of the furniture being made of wood or recycled and one-use only plastics are prohibited. They will also need an homogeneus aesthetic integrated with the natural landscape, do the color of the hammocks and canopies will have to be either beige or sand.
- Distance between the hammocks areas: The hammocks and canopies area will have to be at a minimum distance of six meters from the coastline. Separations between limits of polygons and the canopy will be of two meters, 1.3 meters between the hammocks and 3.1 meters between the axis of the canopies.
- Balinese beds prohibited, but yes to 'premium' hammocks: Cort has established the prohibition of concessionaries placing balinese beds in the sandbanks but it could allow areas of the beach of Palma and Cala Major to have 'premium' hammocks. In case that the concessionaries choose this service, the density of hammocks in these areas will have to be of a 30% less than common areas.
- Sandbanks cleaning: Another of the points that regulates the conrtact is the frequency of beaches cleaning. This way in peak season --from Palm Sunday to the month of October-- it will have to be done, at least, twice a day. Already in low season it will be done, at least, once a week, in terms of how many swimmers and waste there is, except for the withdrawal of rubbish bags that will have to be done more often.
- Schedules: Regarding the schedules of different services that will have to be offered between Palm Sunday and April 30th, the minimum schedule will be from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.; between May 1st and June 30th, from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.; and from Juy 1st to August 31st, from 10 a.m. to 7:30 p.m.; in September, from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.; and in October, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
