The Balearics withdraw close to 8 tons of waste in the coast in September

Mallorca consolidates over half the collected material by the boats.

The coastal cleaning service, coordinated by the public company PortsIB, ascribed at the Sea and Water Cycle Counselling, has withdrawn a total of 7.988,30 kilos of waste from the coasts of the Balearics during the month of September of 2025. The number represents a daily output of 266,28 kilos and reflects the constant work of 23 boats that participated in cleaning campaigns this year: 15 beach types and coastal types, distributed between the four islands.

By boat type, the beach boats recollected 4.408,95 kilos, while the coastal ones withdrew 3.579,35 kilos during the month. 

By islands, Mallorca concentrated the most waste volume, with 4.387,70 kilos, followed by Formentera with 1.536,80 kilos, Menorca with 1.120,30 kilos, and Ibiza with 943,50 kilos. The beach boats, adapted to operate in little-depth areas, and coastal ones, capable of getting far up to five miles from the coast, worked uninterruptedly during the 30 days of the month. 

Regarding the collected materials, plastic represented 35,29% of the total, followed by vegetation (22,17%) and other diverse materials (20,67%).

In addition to ordinary withdrawing, special actions to withdraw voluminous objects were carried out. In Mallorca, dispersed fuel waste, accumulated vegetation were, a trunk, a drifting boat, woods and vegetal waste were eliminated; and in Formentera, two drifting boats and a trunk.

During the month, four warnings were attended, three of them managed in collaboration with Maritime Rescue and 112 emergencies services, and one by institutions or individuals.

The coastal cleaning campaign, programmed until September 30th, has ended after five months of constant activity. However, extraordinarily, PortsIB has kept two boats active –a beach type one and a coastal type one– in the area of Vila’s port (Ibiza) to reinforce the withdrawal of accumulated waste after the heavy rain registered at the end of the month.
