The Balearics remain on alert

The Statal Agency of Metheorology (Aemet) foresees for this Monday November 24th a day marked by a covered sky, that will develop towards cloudy periods, with weak and occassional rain in the Balearics. Night temperatures will go up in a locally notorious way, while the daily ones will stay with no changes or in light increase.

The west and southwest wind will blow moderatedly to strongly, with streaks that could reach the 70 km/h in Ibiza and Formentar. These adverse conditions have motivated the activation of some warnings due to wind and coastal phenomena in the archipelago.

In the south of Mallorca, the Aemet keeps for this Monday a risk of the 40%-70% due to west wind of 50 up to 60 km/h (force 7) and waves of up to 3 meters ,  between 10 a.m. and 11:59 p.m. In the East of Mallorca, the warning will be active between 6:00 p.m. and 11:59 p.m. with similar conditions.

The Pitiusas will also be affected by the weather. From 04:00 a.m. to 11:59 p.m., Ibiza and Formentera will regsietr west winds of 50 to 60 km/h and waves of 3 meters, in addition to maximum streaks of 70 km/h during the whole period.

On Tuesday, November 25th, the 70 km/h  streaks in Ibiza and Formentera will last until 03:59 a.m. From midnight and until 08:59 a.m., wind will shift to the northeast, staying at 50-60 km/h, with waves of 2 to 3 meters. In the south of Mallorca, these conditions will last until 10:59 a.m., while in the Sierra de Tramuntana northeast winds of the same intensity are expected between 03:00 a.m. and 10:59 a.m.

Wednesday, November 26th, the situation will get worse in Menorca, where an important warning due to waves op 5 to 6 meters, with maximum aves that could reach 10 to 12 meters, has been given. 80 km/h wind streaks are also expected in the north during the whole session.

That same day, the Sierra de Tramontana and the north and northeast of Mallorca will be under important warning from 06:00 p.m. to 11:59 p.m., with 4 to 5 meters waves and maximum of 7 to 9 meters, generated by the strong north wind.

Aemet reminds the importance of being cautious before these strong wind and dangerous seas. It is recommended to avoid getting close to cliffs, breakwaters or areas where the waves break, since the expected wabes can be dangerous even from observes from land. It i also recommended to ensure objects that can fall, such as pots, canopies or exterior furniture, and avoiding innecessary trips, especially in exposed areas. 

In addition, at sea, the recommendation is clear: not goin out to sail and staying away from moored boats. Fishmongers and nautical athletes must suspend any expected activity until the conditions improve.
