The Balearic Islands have been crowned victors of Spain in Optimist for Autonomic Teams in the date that has been celebrated from Thursday, June 26th, in the city of Melilla. In the final of the championship they have imposed themselves to the first Catalonia team, that defended the gold achieved last year.

Last Sunday, June 29th, the journey kicked off once again at 11 a.m. with the ‘Delta’ and with a fleet going to the regattas’ area, where there have been weak east winds again, to continue with the second Round Robin of the championship. Finally, it has not been possible to be completed, since the limit hour, 2:30 a.m., has been reached, established by the Committee, to start the semifinals.

In that moment, after resolving some allegations, it has been decided that the two teams from the Balearic Islands, as well as the first pair of Catalonia and the second one of the Valencian Community, would take part in the Round Robin semifinals.

The direct fight for the podium made the emotion and the intensity increase in the regatta’s area. The ‘Jury’ had to improve their attention, while the Committee started the encounters of the semifinal from the boat.

The first teams of Catalonia and the Balearics passed to the final, after achieving two partial victories in the semifinal, while the second Balearic team and the Valencian Community took part in the third and fourth place in the Petit Final.

The final kicked off with the Catalans winning the first encounter in their favor. Then, the Balearics would be the ones who would win the two following encounters to obtain the title dor 2-1.

María de Lluc Bestard, Antoni Llull, Edoardo Cioffi y Sibila Busquets, all from Real Club Náutico de Palma, are the members from Baleares 1 and the new champions of Spain.

In the Petit Final, Valencia 2 imposed itself to Baleares 2 also due to an adjusted 2-1.

This way, Spain’s Optimist Championship for Autonomic Teams that the Royal Spanish Sailing Federation asked the Real Club Marítimo de Melilla and the Sports Council with ‘Melilla, Ciudad del Deporte’ to organize during these days of June comes to an end. A competition in which seven autonomic and from Melilla’s teams have taken part in.
