Ports, fishermen’s associations, yacht clubs and the Spanish Navy are today celebrating one of the most moving occasions on the maritime calendar: the Feast of Our Lady of Mount Carmel.
STAY UP TO DATE OF WHAT WE DO AND RECEIVE OUR NEWSLETTERThe sea once again takes centre stage across the Balearic Islands on 16 July with the celebration of the Feast of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, patron saint of sailors, fishermen, navigators and the Spanish Navy. Deeply rooted in the archipelago’s maritime tradition, the occasion brings together industry professionals, yacht clubs, fishermen’s associations, institutions and sea enthusiasts each year to pay tribute to the patron saint of the seafaring community.
Throughout the day, numerous ports in Mallorca, Menorca, Ibiza and Formentera hold religious services, maritime processions in which an image of the Virgin is carried along the coastline accompanied by decorated boats, and floral tributes in memory of sailors who have lost their lives. These events keep alive a tradition that forms part of the Islands’ identity and unites generations of seafarers through a shared devotion.
The celebration holds particular significance for the Spanish Navy, which marks the feast day of its patron saint every 16 July with a range of military ceremonies throughout Spain. In the Balearic Islands, Porto Pi Naval Station hosts the traditional Mass in honour of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, followed by the formal lowering of the flag and a medal presentation ceremony attended by civil and military authorities, representatives of the nautical sector and members of the Balearic maritime community.
This year’s celebration will also carry particular symbolic significance, as it will be the final Feast of Our Lady of Mount Carmel presided over by Captain Javier Núñez de Prado in his role as Head of the Balearic Islands Naval Sector. He has held the position for the past four years, strengthening cooperation between the Navy and Balearic civil society. His forthcoming appointment to a new post in Madrid will bring to a close a period marked by closer ties between the military institution and the Islands’ wider maritime sector.
Devotion to Our Lady of Mount Carmel dates back to the 13th century and, over time, she became the principal protector of those who live and work at sea. Her figure represents hope, protection and shelter for sailors, fishermen and navigators during their voyages. For this reason, she was proclaimed patron saint of the seafaring community and the Spanish Navy, becoming one of the most representative symbols of Spain’s maritime culture.
Beyond its religious significance, the Feast of Our Lady of Mount Carmel remains a day of celebration and togetherness for the entire maritime community. Fishermen, merchant seafarers, racing sailors, nautical professionals, members of Maritime Rescue, the Guardia Civil’s Maritime Service, yacht clubs, marinas and sea enthusiasts share an occasion that symbolises respect for the sea and for everyone whose work or passion is connected to it.
At Pasión por el Mar, we once again join in this celebration and wish a happy Feast of Our Lady of Mount Carmel to everyone who, from every corner of the Balearic Islands, helps keep our maritime culture alive each day.
