The Balearic Islands prepare to experience a historic solar eclipse from the sea

The Mediterranean Sailors’ Association is organising a group outing to witness the total solar eclipse on the 12th of August, culminating in its traditional annual dinner at the facilities of Club Nàutic Sa Ràpita.

On the 12th of August, the Balearic Islands will be one of the privileged locations from which to witness one of the most eagerly anticipated astronomical events of recent decades: a total solar eclipse that can be observed under exceptional conditions from various points along the coastline and, above all, from the sea.

To mark the occasion, Lorenzo Pons, president of the Mediterranean Sailors’ Association, visited the studios of Passion for the Sea to explain why this eclipse will be so spectacular and to present the initiative the organisation is preparing to allow people to observe it safely.

“The eclipse will take place right at sunset, when the Sun is about to disappear below the horizon. In addition, there is an optical effect that makes both the Sun and the Moon appear much larger when they are close to the horizon, so we believe it will be a truly spectacular eclipse from the Mallorcan coast.”

According to Pons, not all parts of the island will offer the same visibility, as the terrain may partially obscure the phenomenon. “The best places to appreciate it will be the coast and the sea, particularly the island’s northern coast and southern area.”

With the aim of experiencing the eclipse from a privileged setting and with every safety measure in place, the Mediterranean Sailors’ Association has organised a special event in collaboration with Club Nàutic Sa Ràpita.

The programme includes a talk by Mallorcan astrophysicist Alberto Rebassa, the distribution of approved eclipse-viewing glasses, and a group sailing trip to the point offering the best perspective of the phenomenon. Afterwards, participants will share a dinner at the yacht club’s facilities.

During the interview, Lorenzo Pons stressed that the eclipse must be enjoyed responsibly, especially by those who choose to go out to sea.

The president of ADN Mediterráneo noted that many vessels will be returning after dark, making it essential to check the condition of the boat, navigation lights and engine beforehand. “Anyone who has not used their boat all year should not use it on that day unless they have carried out the proper maintenance.”

He also warned that Maritime Rescue expects a significant increase in activity due to the high number of vessels likely to gather at sea that day. “People need to be very careful, because there will likely be many who need to be towed. There is no point in taking unnecessary risks that could turn an enjoyable situation into a dangerous one.”

The phenomenon has also sparked enormous tourist interest. Indeed, the president of ADN Mediterráneo stated that many charter companies already have all their boats booked for that day. “Charter companies have been fully booked for that day for a year.”

In addition, the Government of the Balearic Islands is already working on planning for a day that could see major flows of people travelling to viewing locations. “The Government is treating it as a high-risk event, because people will be anxious to get to the eclipse. Roads will be congested and there will be a range of issues that will require them to remain on alert,” Pons confirmed. He added that, according to the information available to the association, special mobility measures are expected to be adopted to prevent gridlock and improve safety throughout the day.

But beyond its scientific interest, the eclipse promises to become a once-in-a-lifetime experience for the thousands of people travelling to the Balearic Islands to witness it.

The Mediterranean Sailors’ Association hopes for favourable weather, allowing everyone to enjoy a natural spectacle that will bring together the sky and the Mediterranean, if only for a few moments, in an unforgettable image.
