The APB strengthens its commitment to nautical innovation and sustainability in its new session

The Balearic Port Authority (APB) successfully held the event “Sustainability as a Competitive Element” on April 30 at the Port Centre in the Port of Palma. The activity took place within the framework of the Palma International Boat Show, reinforcing the APB’s commitment to innovation and sustainability in the nautical and port sectors.

The session began with remarks from APB President Javier Sanz, who emphasized the organization’s commitment to sustainable development as a key factor for the future of the port system. Following this, Jorge Martín, Head of the Operations and Environment Department at the APB, presented the new Environmental Best Practices Guide for Nautical Facilities, a tool that offers criteria to reduce the environmental impact of port activities and promote more efficient management.

The day continued with a roundtable discussion moderated by journalist Mar Ferragut from Diario de Mallorca. During the debate, David Pino, Director of Port Vell and Coordinator of the America's Cup at the Port of Barcelona, shared his experience with major nautical events. Ricardo Sanz, Co-Managing Partner at IRP Engineering, presented examples of technological solutions applied to sustainability. Lucía Mingot, Director of Quality, Innovation, and Sustainability at Astilleros Mallorca, emphasized the need to integrate environmental criteria throughout the entire value chain of the nautical sector. Isabel Teruel, Director of Operations at Ocibar, advocated for the importance of collaboration between companies to achieve common goals. Finally, Silvia Delgado, Managing Director of the Balearic Islands Regional Development Agency, highlighted the support tools the administration offers to promote sustainable innovation in the sector.

The event concluded with closing remarks by Antoni Mercant, Director General of Ports and Maritime Transport, who underscored the need to strengthen the alliance between the public and private sectors to move toward a sustainable blue economy.

The day ended with a networking space that facilitated the exchange of ideas and the birth of new collaborations. With initiatives like this, the Balearic Port Authority reaffirms its commitment to an environmentally responsible and forward-looking model of port management.
