The APB invites civilians to participate on the transformation of the south shore of Mahón's port

‘El puerto que quieres’ opens its public phase with a web where civilians will be able to be informed and gives their own proposals regarding the future of the marine front.

The Portuary Authority of the Balearics (APB) has presented today, November 7th, to all the civiliznas the participative process for the design of the new south shore of the port of Mahón, an initiative that aims to define the future of the maritime front between Colàrsega and Cala Figuera collectively.

During the event, the APB has shown too the website of the process --https://portmaohoritzo2030.com--, a digital space that will allows civilians to be informed about the project, getting to know the work phases and carrying out proposals that will directly contribute to the design of the project.

The process, that began last month of September with meetings with the local institutions (Menorca's Insular Councill, Town Hall of Mahón Town Hall of Es Castell) and the commercial sector of the port, will be developed until the end of the year under the slogan ‘El puerto que quieres’.

The main objective of this initiative is listenning, collecting proposals and building consensus with the different implied agents --residents, merchants, social entities, professionals and public institutions-- to define the future of the south shore. The conclussiones of the process will be added to the design of the draft, guaranteeing a shared solution, adapted to the real needs of the territory.

The public phase of the process starts today with the activation of the website and the presentation of the calendar of the in-person sessions. Participating workshops, which will be celebrated next November 28th and 29th, will be divided into four topic areas: mobility and logistics, economic and social boosting, neighbors and merchants, and sustainability. These sessions will allow civilians to discuss and add ideas regarding utilities, equipments and priorities of the maritime front, contributing this way to define a more integrated, accesible and sustainable south shore model.

This initiative forms part of the strategy ‘Port Maó, Horitzó 2030’, with which the APB reaffirms its commitment with an urban, inclusive, sutainable and centered collaboration in people, based in transparency, collaboration and dialogue with the Menorcan society.

The redesign of the south shore aims to recover space for the pedestrian, reduce the spotlight of traffic and boost a kinder mobility. The inclusion of a new bike lane and an electric public transport system that will connect the future parking of Cala Figuera with the maritime station of the Cós Nou. 

It is also programmed to amplify green eyes, incorporate quality urban furniture elements and create new areas of recreation thought for an active and constant use throughout the year.

With this process, the port of Mahón gets ready to turn into a better integrated space in the city, more accessible for all and aligned with the values of social cohesion, environmental sustainability and economic development that define the future of ports of general interest.
