STP Shipyard Palma reinforces its commitment to safety with its yearly firefighting drill

The day began with a training course aimed at the personnel involved, as part of the shipyard’s commitment to ongoing training and the proper application of safety and emergency protocols.

This was followed by two practical exercises.

The first simulated an oil spill at sea caused by a vessel with a leak. During the exercise, a containment boom was deployed to prevent the spread of the spill, and an oil skimmer, a pump specifically designed to collect floating liquids, was used, recreating a realistic environmental emergency scenario.

The second exercise consisted of a simulated fire on board a sailing yacht undergoing repairs, with a victim trapped inside. The scenario began with the detection of a fire caused by a solvent leak that ignited during welding work.

Once the fire was detected, emergency protocols were activated: the crew evacuated the area, moved to the covered assembly point, and then proceeded down to the onshore assembly point following the established evacuation routes. When the absence of a worker was detected, the rescue team was deployed, acting in coordination with the containment team, the vessel’s crew, the Palma City Fire Brigade, and STP’s operations staff, with the objective of rescuing the victim and preventing the fire from spreading.

During the response, firefighting equipment was used, including a curtain-forming nozzle, to control the fire and protect adjacent areas.

The drill concluded with a joint evaluation meeting involving the firefighters, the STP team, and the vessel’s crew, during which the development of the operation, response times, and areas for improvement were analyzed, further strengthening emergency response protocols.

Through exercises such as this, STP Shipyard Palma reinforces its commitment to safety, risk prevention, and environmental protection, ensuring an effective and coordinated response to potential incidents within its facilities.
