The Consell de Mallorca will begin the extraction operation of the Ses Fontanelles shipwreck on March 10th at 9:00 a.m. The intervention will be directed by a leading technical and scientific team specialized in underwater archaeology and heritage conservation.

The work will be coordinated by the project’s co-directors: Miquel Àngel Cau-Ontiveros from the University of Barcelona; Darío Bernal-Cassola from the University of Cádiz; Enrique García from the University of the Balearic Islands; and Carlos de Juan from the University of Valencia. They will lead a multidisciplinary team of researchers, archaeologists, conservators, and engineers with extensive experience in this type of intervention.

The operational leadership team includes professionals with a distinguished track record, such as researcher Carlos de Juan, who directed the extraction campaign of the Mazarrón II shipwreck, one of the benchmark projects in underwater archaeology in Spain. The team also includes conservators Luis Carlos Zambrano and Elisa Fernández, along with several specialized archaeologists.

The project also involves Mallorcan professionals such as archaeologists Sebastià Munar and Xim Gual de Torrella.

It is also worth highlighting the involvement of the National Museum of Underwater Archaeology (ARQUA), a leading institution in the conservation of underwater heritage.

At the same time, preparatory work is being finalized these days at Castell de Sant Carles, where a space is being prepared to receive and treat the archaeological material once the extraction of the vessel has been completed.

The operation beginning on March 10 represents a decisive step to ensure the preservation and study of the Ses Fontanelles shipwreck, considered one of the most significant underwater archaeological discoveries in the western Mediterranean.
