Setmana Blava exceeds 5,600 pupils enrolled in its second edition

Regional Minister Lafuente visited the Can Pastilla Yacht Club and shared the day with the children taking part in an edition that has exceeded 5,600 pupils enrolled.

The Regional Minister for the Sea and the Water Cycle visited the Can Pastilla Maritime Club today as part of the 2nd Setmana Blava, the free nautical activities programme aimed at fifth and sixth year primary school pupils from across the Balearic Islands.

During the visit, the minister was accompanied by the Director General for Ports and Maritime Transport, Antoni Mercant, the Regional Secretary for Culture and Sport, Pedro Vidal, the manager of PortsIB, Kico Villalonga, as well as the presidents of the Balearic Sailing Federation and the Balearic Canoeing Federation and representatives of the yacht clubs involved in the programme.

The 2nd Setmana Blava has consolidated its growth this year with 5,666 pupils enrolled from 100 schools, a figure that represents a significant increase compared with the 3,382 pupils and 91 schools that took part in the first edition.

One of the main new features of this edition is the extension of the implementation period, which has gone from one week to a full month, from the 18th of May to the 18th of June, with the aim of making organisation easier for schools and allowing greater participation.

In addition, the Government is covering the cost of school transport this year, meaning that pupils’ journeys to the yacht clubs are also free of charge, further strengthening the accessibility of the programme.

The programme takes place in the participating yacht clubs and marinas, 28 across the Balearic Islands this year, and combines theoretical and practical activities. The sessions include workshops on safety at sea, the marine environment and basic sailing knowledge, as well as nautical activities such as sailing, canoeing and kayaking, delivered by specialist instructors.

During the visit, the minister was able to see the activities first hand and share the day with the participating pupils, highlighting the importance of children having direct contact with the marine environment.

In this regard, the minister stated that “Setmana Blava has consolidated itself in just two years as a leading initiative to bring the sea and nautical sports closer to young people, with growing participation and very strong involvement from schools and yacht clubs across all the islands”. He also stressed that “the expansion of the programme and free school transport allow us to ensure that more and more children can enjoy this educational and sporting experience”.

With this second edition, the programme, promoted by the Government of the Balearic Islands through the Regional Ministries of the Sea and the Water Cycle, Education and Universities and Tourism, Culture and Sport, as well as Ports de les Illes Balears, with the collaboration of the Balearic Sailing Federation and the Balearic Canoeing Federation, is consolidating itself as an initiative to promote nautical sports and bring maritime culture closer to pupils in the Balearic Islands.
