Sant Josep’s town hall strengthens beach cleaning with new mechanized service

26th August 2025 by Agencies

The Sant Josep Town Hall presented this Monday, August 25th, at Cala Bassa beach, a new mechanized cleaning service with fine mesh, aimed at improving the environmental condition of the municipality’s natural beaches in response to the growing presence of waste such as microplastics, cigarette butts, glass, and wood debris.

These extraordinary interventions will take place every two weeks until the end of October, complementing the usual manual cleaning tasks, which have proven insufficient given the increasing amount of waste found in the sand.

The Councillor for the Environment, Felicia Bocú, attended the launch of the service and explained that the decision came after numerous citizen alerts collected through the municipal green lines. “Although this is a natural beach, we considered intervention essential. The sand cannot remain in this condition. We live off our environment—it is our heritage and also what we sell as a tourist destination. We must keep it clean, attractive, and worthy,” Bocú stated.

According to the councillor, municipal technical services issued a report confirming the situation, recommending targeted mechanized intervention as the only effective way to regenerate the sand and restore it to optimal conditions.

This new service is part of a broader environmental awareness strategy that the Town Hall maintains during the high season. Through the concessionaire company UTE Es Vedrà, a team of environmental educators works daily on the beaches, carrying out awareness campaigns for both tourists and residents.

The initiative includes informative talks, the use of giant waste replicas (such as cigarette butts or plastic bottles) as impactful visual elements, the distribution of reusable ashtrays, and educational materials highlighting the importance of keeping beaches free of litter. “Beyond direct action on the sand, we want to change habits and mindsets. Cleanliness begins with prevention,” Bocú concluded.
