Sant Joan to redefine the installation of eco-friendly buoys in Benirràs and Portinatx

The new approach will seek to make the protection of posidonia compatible with traditional uses and responsible nautical activity in both areas.

The Regional Minister for the Sea and the Water Cycle of the Government of the Balearic Islands, Juan Manuel Lafuente, took part remotely this Wednesday, July 8, in a working meeting with the Mayor of Sant Joan de Labritja, Tania Marí, to analyse the planned project to install eco-friendly buoys in the areas of Benirràs and Portinatx. The meeting was also attended by the Director General of Ports and Maritime Transport, Antoni Mercant; the manager of Ports de les Illes Balears, Kiko Villalonga; as well as representatives and legal services from Sant Joan Town Council.

During the meeting, the Town Council conveyed the need to review the initial approach to the project in order to adapt it better to the social, historical and practical reality of these two locations in the municipality. The Regional Ministry expressed its willingness to work in coordination with the Town Council to move forward with a proposal that would strengthen the protection of Posidonia oceanica while also taking into account traditional uses, responsible nautical activity and the needs of residents, fishermen and regular users of the coastline.

As the main conclusion of the meeting, Sant Joan Town Council will take the lead in drafting a new technical project that will serve as the basis for redefining the planned action in Benirràs and Portinatx. This document will be prepared with local knowledge of the area and in coordination with the Government of the Balearic Islands.

The Regional Ministry for the Sea and the Water Cycle gave a positive assessment of the meeting and of the willingness shown by the administrations to work together towards a shared solution that is compatible with environmental conservation and with the social reality of both areas.
