Sant Antoni de Portmany to host a new marine seabed clean-up day

Sant Antoni de Portmany will host the 22nd edition of the marine seabed clean-up day “Sant Antoni Net a Fons” next Sunday, February 1. This well-established initiative reinforces the municipality’s commitment to protecting the natural environment and ensuring the sustainability of its coastline.

Organised by the Environmental Department of Sant Antoni Town Council, the activity forms part of the Sant Antoni patron saint festivities and aims to raise public awareness of the importance of preserving marine ecosystems and keeping the seabed and the bay’s coastline clean.

Over its 22 editions, Sant Antoni Net a Fons has benefited from the collaboration of the s’Embarcador fishing club and various underwater activity centres, which have supported and helped grow the initiative. In recent years, the event has attracted an average of around 50 volunteers, and in last year’s edition as much as four tonnes of waste were removed from the port area.

This environmental action is made possible thanks to the involvement of numerous partner organisations, including Arenal Diving, Grupo GEA, Ports IB, Club Nàutic Sant Antoni, the Civil Guard’s GEAS unit, Sant Antoni Civil Protection, Eivisub, UTE Portmany, the Associació de Voluntaris d’Eivissa, the Sant Antoni Agricultural Cooperative, Asociación Protemar Aventure, Vuelta a Ibiza MTB and CAS s’Embarcador, among others.

The Councillor for the Environment, Pepita Torres, has encouraged the public to take part in the initiative, highlighting the importance of actions like this in raising awareness of the negative impact of waste on the coastline and the need to protect the marine environment.

The clean-up will begin at 10:00 a.m. at the Far del Moll Nou, at the end of the harbour. The activity is open to everyone, and work teams will be organised to operate for approximately three hours.

Shore-based cleaning will focus on Coves Blanques beach and the Passeig de Ponent, where gloves and bags will be provided for participants.

For the underwater clean-up, participants must hold a valid diving certification and insurance, and must contact the Arenal Diving centre in advance.
