Sailing Week kicks off with nearly 200 registered boats

The event, sponsored by Guillermo Duran, counts toward the ILCA 6 Federation Cup and the Mallorca Championship for the Optimist class.

The Club Nàutic Cala Gamba will once again bring together dinghy sailing and lateen sailing in the traditional Setmana de Vela Trofeu DURAN, a regatta celebrating its sixteenth edition and expected to gather around 200 boats over the next two weekends.

The competition, one of the most important events on the Club Nàutic Cala Gamba calendar, will begin today, May 9, with races for the Optimist children's class and lateen sailing regattas, showcasing true gems of Mallorcan maritime heritage under sail.

It is precisely traditional sailing that will open the XVI Setmana de Vela – Trofeu DURAN. The lateen sail boats will complete a course around the Bay of Palma starting at 11:00 a.m. A bit later, at 1:00 p.m., the first warning signal for the Optimist class is scheduled, with over a hundred boats expected to compete.

The organizers have scheduled three races per day for the Optimist class on Saturday, May 10, and Sunday, May 11, weather permitting. Additionally, the regatta will count toward the Mallorca Championship for that category.

On the second weekend, May 17 and 18, the spotlight at Cala Gamba will be on the ILCA 4 and ILCA 6 classes. Around 70 sailors from these dinghy classes will compete in a regatta that, for ILCA 6, will serve as the Federation Cup—a factor that has encouraged participation from athletes from Menorca and Ibiza.

Joan Marc Rigo, manager of Club Nàutic Cala Gamba, highlighted the support of the sponsor, who has consistently backed this Setmana de Vela – Trofeu DURAN, an event that has become a sporting benchmark for the club, alongside the Trofeu Hivern Fan Mallorca for lateen sailing and the Trofeu Xicarandana Memorial Raimundo Reus for cruising boats.
