Port de Pollença presents the second edition of its Tuna Fair

The gastronomic event will take place on the 23rd and 24th of May in Port de Pollença under the slogan “Places like this deserve to be celebrated!”.

The Director General highlighted that tuna is a seasonal fish, caught sustainably and with the highest guarantees of freshness and that its consumption helps maintain the activity of fishermen in the Balearic Islands.

The Regional Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and the Natural Environment, through the Directorate General for Agri-food Quality and Local Products, together with Pollença Town Council and the Pollença Fishermen’s Guild, is organising the 2nd Pollença Tuna Fair the “Flavours of the Bay” event, with the aim of promoting the consumption of this local product.

The Director General for Agri-food Quality and Local Products, Joan Llabrés, attended the presentation of this gastronomic event, which will take place on the 23rd and 24th of May in Port de Pollença and which this year carries the slogan “Places like this deserve to be celebrated!”

This is an event that combines gastronomy, culture and local identity, with the aim of showcasing the privileged setting of Pollença Bay and its connection to the fishing sector. It should be noted that tuna has an annual fishing quota of around 50 tonnes in the Balearic Islands.

During the presentation, Joan Llabrés stressed that “tuna is a seasonal fish, caught sustainably by our fishing sector and with the highest guarantees of freshness, since the distance between fisherman and consumer is minimal. The consumption of local tuna contributes to maintaining the activity of fishermen in the Balearic Islands.”

In this regard, he added that “initiatives like this are essential to continue advancing the promotion of local products and bringing them closer to consumers.”

Finally, he pointed out that “it is important to make it easier for consumers to clearly identify the origin of products and value them as their own, because this strengthens trust, boosts consumption and supports the primary sector in our region.”

“Flavours of the Bay” aims to encourage direct contact between producers and consumers, promote the consumption of local products, and help strengthen ties with the primary sector, highlighting the quality, sustainability and distinct identity of the Balearic Islands.

This year, “Flavours of the Bay” is expanding its programme with a more participatory approach and an even closer connection to the local area. The programme includes, among other things, live cooking demonstrations featuring tuna as the main ingredient, led by renowned chefs and restaurants from Pollença Bay, including Santi Taura, Marga Coll, Pau Sintes, Anders, Desnudo Mallorca, Chef Rojo, La Llonja, Uno Náutico, La Cantina, Terrae, 2 Kanallas Street Gourmet, Stay, Curo Marí, Uno Vicenç del Mar, Iru and Micelio.

All dishes will be paired with wines from wineries such as Mortitx, Can Axartell, Petita Bodega 7103, Can Xanet, Vinyes de Formentor, Nacra, Bodega Galmés i Ferrer and Dunord Vitícola, among others. Another activity on the programme is a live ronqueo demonstration by Toni Fiol, from BlueFin, an expert in this traditional tuna-cutting technique, who will explain the process piece by piece, followed by an auction in aid of charitable organisations in the municipality. The programme also includes music, with live performances by bands and DJ sets.

There will also be activities for all audiences, especially families, as well as a collaboration with the Balearic Islands Oceanographic Centre, which will offer educational content to make knowledge of the marine environment more accessible.
