Sant Josep’s Council, through the Environment and Youth Department, boosted yesterday, August 6th, the educational session ‘Socorrista por un día’, celebrated in the beach of Port d’es Torrent with the collaboration of MARSAVE, the municipal service of maritime rescue. This activity aims to nearing the tasks that carry out the lifeguards to the kids and boosting respect and awareness among security in the beaches.

In this occasion, the session has counted with the participation of 45 children coming from the three summer schools of the area: CEIP L’Urgell (15 kids), CEIP Es Vedrà (10 kids) y CEIP Can Raspalls (20 kids). The boys and girls have been able to take part in practical workshops of cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), learning the flags and the prevention signs used in beaches, and receiving training about the importance of keeping the environment clean and safe.

According to Felicia Bocú, Environment Councilor of Sant Josep de sa Talaia, “this is an activity that we have organized in July as well as in August, and that allows kids to understand what it means to save a life. It is essential that they know not only the physical preparation that implies being a lifeguard, but also the necessary emotional training to act in emergency situations”.

In addition, Bocú has pointed out the great welcome of the suggestion. “The kids are thrilled. They have participated actively and with a lot of interest. This is a very valuable divulgation activity that we hope we can keep offering”, she has concluded.

In addition, before the activities related with lifesaving, the kids have participated in a waste recollection in the same beach, taking out plastics and rubbish with the objective of gaining awareness regarding the importance of taking care of our natural environment.

Both initiatives form part of a program that Sant Josep de sa Talaia’s Council develops since some summers ago, with the aim to express, in a participative way, values such as security, sustainability and collective responsibility from a young age.
