Over 20 ships gather at Palma’s bay to compete in the Cape 31 European Champs

The trendy monotype continental race reunites 24 boats of 13 countries from October 15th to 19th in Palma’s bay.

The Real Club Náutico de Palma (RCNP) will host for the first time a Cape 31 international monotype that will celebrate Europe’s championship from October 15th to 19th in the bay of Palma. The date will reunite 14 boats of 13 countries, which will turn this edition into the most crowded and international of the class’s history.

The RCNP will be represented by MeerBlick’, of a German shipowner set in Mallorca Gaby Pohlmann, that will compete before a high-level fleet integrated by teams from the UK, Italy, Germany, Sweden, USA, France, Turkey, Portugal and other European countries. Amongst the favorites there’s ‘La Pericolosa’, current European champion, and the ‘Stig’, of Alessandro Rombelli,who arrives as leader of the Mediterranean season.

Cape 31 is a regattas boat in the current boom in Europe and the United States. Designed by the naval architect Mark Mills, measures 9’6 metres of length and is characterized by its lightweight, its great sail surface and modern line helmet, characteristics that allow reaching great speeds. It’s a monotype that competes in real time, which guarantees very tight regattas and of great spectacularity. 

Manu Fraga, director of the Real Club Náutico de Palma, highlights that the Cape 31 is a boat “in current effervescence” and which means “a pride and a challenge” hosting Europe’s championship: “Our yearly regattas and sportive activities calendar is very tight, and every addition represents a challenge, but our commitment with sailing and the city makes us always find a gap to add new competitions, especially if it’s a high-level international race as it is this one”.

The program of the Cape 31 Europe’s Championship at Real Club Náutico de Palma will kick off today, October 15th, with the inspection of the teams, the registry of participants and the shipowners reunion. The sea tests will start on the 16th at midday, followed by a welcoming cocktail. Between the 17th and the 19th the competition will be celebrated, with an attention signal expected for every session regarding the conditions. The date will end on Sunday, October 19th with the last test series and the awards ceremony.
