The day unfolded under demanding and highly technical wind conditions, with a westerly breeze of around 14 knots in the morning, gradually building throughout the day and veering to west-northwest, reaching peaks of 20 knots during the final races.
The 49er class opened the day’s programme with two morning starts under stable conditions, successfully completing the four scheduled races. After this first day, provisional leadership belongs to the Irish duo Robert Dickson and Sean Waddilove, followed by the Germans Simon Heindl and Conrad Jacobs. The best Spanish result comes from brothers Martín and Jaime Wizner, who hold an excellent third provisional position, confirming their consistency in the international fleet. Their teammates in the Spanish pre-Olympic squad, Conrad Konitzer (Club Nàutic s’Arenal) and Anto Torrado, fifth at the most recent World Championship, are currently 14th.
The ILCA 7 and ILCA 6 classes entered the water after midday. In ILCA 7, sailors completed three races, with increasing wind intensity testing both endurance and technique across the fleet. Croatian U19 sailor Filip Jurisic leads the provisional standings, with French sailor Martin Kowalski and Hungarian Jonatan Vadnai in second and third, one and six points behind respectively. Javier Seguí, from the Reial Club Nàutic de Pollença, is the leading Spaniard in 19th position in the largest fleet of this sixth edition of the Lanzarote International Regatta.
In ILCA 6, also with three races completed, Dutch sailor Roos Wind, two-time youth world champion, moved into the provisional lead. Canarian sailor Isabel Hernández was the standout among the Spanish fleet, placing fourth, very close to the podium, after a solid and consistent day in shifting wind conditions.
As many as four Spanish sailors are currently in the provisional Top 10, with Lara Himmes (7th), Irene de Tomás (9th) and María Gornés, from the Real Club Náutico de Palma, in 10th position.
With this first Olympic-class day completed, the Lanzarote International Regatta reinforces its role as a benchmark event on the international sailing calendar, combining strong international participation with a notable presence of Spanish sailors.
The competition will continue today, Tuesday 3 February, starting at 11:00 local time, with new races scheduled for the Olympic classes at Marina Rubicón.
The Lanzarote International Regatta is organized by Marina Rubicón and is sponsored by Turismo Lanzarote through its sports tourism brand Lanzarote Sports Destination, the Cabildo of Lanzarote through the Island Sports Service, the Centres of Art, Culture and Tourism of the Cabildo of Lanzarote, and the Town Council of Yaiza, with the collaboration, among others, of the Canarian Sailing Federation, the Latin Sail Federation, and DinghyCoach.
