The Presidency of the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC), an agency under the Ministry of Science, Innovation, and Universities, has appointed Gotzon Basterretxea as the new institutional delegate of CSIC in the Balearic Islands. Basterretxea succeeds Salud Deudero, who held the position since 2024.

In his new role, he will be responsible within the autonomous community for coordinating and representing the CSIC before public and private institutions, as well as interacting with the various R&D&i stakeholders in the region. His responsibilities will also include managing and supporting research, knowledge transfer, and innovation, alongside promoting training, outreach, and scientific culture activities.

Gotzon Basterretxea holds a PhD in Marine Sciences from the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. His specialty is biological oceanography, particularly the interactions between plankton and marine dynamics. He conducts his research at the Mediterranean Institute for Advanced Studies (IMEDEA, CSIC-UIB), where he served as director from 2020 until mid-2025.

In addition to his representation and scientific promotion duties, Dr. Basterretxea will focus on strengthening collaboration between CSIC centers and the various R&D&i agents in the Balearic Islands, with special attention to the University of the Balearic Islands (UIB), with which CSIC co-manages two centers. He will also work to facilitate connections between these stakeholders and the network of over one hundred research centers that CSIC maintains across Spain.

The CSIC Institutional Delegation in the Balearic Islands coordinates the activities of the three research centers in the region, IMEDEA (CSIC-UIB), IFISC (CSIC-UIB), and the COB (IEO-CSIC), as well as the IGME territorial unit in the archipelago, and participates in the ICTS SOCIB. Its duties include representing CSIC locally, strengthening relationships with regional institutions and organizations, and promoting initiatives that support R&D&i, knowledge transfer, and management. Additionally, it drives education, training, and scientific culture initiatives aimed at increasing visibility of CSIC’s work and generating a positive societal impact.
