New challenge for Balearic sailing: the Optimist Spanish Cup

The Vigo estuary is hosting the Optimist Spanish Cup from May 7th to 10th, one of the major national events in youth sailing, organised by the Real Club Náutico de Vigo. The Balearic expedition will include 17 representatives among the 155 registered participants.

The waters of the Vigo estuary have become the epicentre of Spanish children’s and youth sailing with the Optimist Spanish Cup, a competition bringing together 155 sailors from different autonomous communities.

Among them, the presence of 17 Balearic sailors stands out, as they will defend the high standard of sailing in the islands at a key event on the national calendar. The Balearic representation comes from the Club Marítimo San Antonio de la Playa, Club Nàutic s’Arenal, Reial Club Nàutic del Port de Pollença, Real Club Náutico de Palma and Club Nàutic s’Estanyol.

The competition is organised by the Real Club Náutico de Vigo, on behalf of the Royal Spanish Sailing Federation, in collaboration with the Galician Sailing Federation and the Spanish International Optimist Class Association. The event is reserved for sailors in the under-13 and under-16 categories, both male and female, and will also serve as a qualifying event within the national calendar.

The programme, which began on May 7 with participant registration, equipment checks and the opening ceremony, will give way to racing on the water today, May 8, with the warning signal scheduled for 11:00 a.m. The organisers have planned a maximum of nine races, with a qualifying series and a final series, always subject to weather conditions.

The setting could not be more emblematic. Founded in 1906, the Real Club Náutico de Vigo is a historic institution in Galician sport. From its beginnings on a moored boat to the inauguration of its clubhouse in 1945, which this year celebrates its 80th anniversary, the club has been the cradle of great sailors and the organiser of top-level international competitions.

With its experience in organising European and world championships, the RCNV offers a technical, demanding and safe racecourse for the young participants. For the Balearic sailors, the Spanish Cup will be a new opportunity to compete against the best national specialists in the Optimist class and confirm the importance of the islands in Spanish youth sailing.
