Biscay will become the main meeting point for grassroots sailing in Spain from March 30th to April 4th with the staging of the 2026 Spanish Optimist Championship, one of the most important events on the youth sailing calendar. The competition will be organized by the Real Club Marítimo del Abra, in Las Arenas, Getxo, and will bring together 141 sailors from different parts of the country in the waters of the Basque Country.

YOU HAVE ALL OF OUR FULL PROGRAMS HERE!The Optimist class, regarded as the largest and most popular in the world for beginner and youth competition sailing, will once again take center stage during a week that will feature some of the most promising young talents in Spanish sailing. Among them, Balearic sailing will have a strong presence, with a total of 20 sailors representing five clubs from the islands: Club Marítimo San Antonio de la Playa, Club Nàutic s’Arenal, Reial Club Nàutic del Port de Pollença, Real Club Náutico de Palma, and Club Nàutic s’Estanyol.
The Balearic Islands will therefore once again play a prominent role in a major national youth sailing event, reflecting the continued strength of the islands’ talent pipeline in this discipline. The Balearic sailors will head into the championship aiming to deliver a strong performance in an event that will feature a large and demanding fleet, while also serving as a benchmark to measure the competitive level of the country’s top specialists in the class.
The championship schedule will begin over the first two days, March 30 and 31, with participant registration, equipment inspection and sealing, as well as the team leaders’ meeting and the opening ceremony. Competition on the water will begin on Wednesday, April 1st, with four consecutive days of racing to decide the final standings of the championship.
The event will run through to Saturday, April 4th, when the organizing club will bring the championship to a close with the closing ceremony and the prize-giving. During those days, the waters of Biscay will provide the setting for a competition that will once again highlight the importance of grassroots sailing and the training work carried out by yacht clubs across the country.
The Real Club Marítimo del Abra will also offer the chance to follow the regatta from the sea through various boat trips for accompanying guests and sailing fans. These outings will take place aboard the ‘Uso Zuria’, with capacity for 12 passengers; the ‘Kais’, with 11 places; the ‘Usito Zuria’, with room for 9 people; and the ‘Uso Vuela’, also with capacity for 11 passengers. The price per seat will be 65 euros.
All in all, the Spanish Optimist Championship will make Biscay one of the main focal points of youth sailing in Spain for a week, in an edition that will also feature a notable presence of Balearic sailors ready to compete at the highest level.
