The first edition of Setmana Blava (Blue Week) has been very well received by educational centers in the Balearic Islands. From May 5 to 9, a total of 4,570 students from 91 schools are participating in activities organized at 26 yacht clubs and marinas across all the islands.

The program, promoted by the regional government (Govern), aims to encourage children to engage in nautical sports and raise awareness about the importance of protecting the marine environment.

The President of the Govern, Margalida Prohens, visited the Cala Gamba Yacht Club to see firsthand how the Setmana Blava is being carried out, to speak with instructors and club representatives, and to share the day with participating students. Also attending the visit were the Minister of the Sea and Water Cycle, Juan Manuel Lafuente, and the Minister of Education and Universities, Antoni Vera, along with the presidents of the Balearic Sailing Federation and the Balearic Canoeing Federation, and representatives from the participating nautical clubs.

During the visit, the president emphasized that “this initiative is a great opportunity to bring maritime culture to younger generations, ensuring equal opportunities and promoting values such as respect, effort, and teamwork through education.”

Setmana Blava offers free activities from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. for 5th and 6th-grade students. Each day combines a theoretical component—with workshops on marine pollution, sea safety, or nautical knots—and a practical component featuring nautical sports such as sailing, canoeing, and paddleboarding. The participating clubs organize the sessions following the guidelines of the Balearic Sailing Federation, which coordinates the program alongside the Govern.

In addition to promoting nautical culture and a healthy lifestyle, Setmana Blava also aims to foster social inclusion and equal access to nautical sports, as well as instill respect for and protection of marine ecosystems from an early age.

Given the success of participation in this first edition, the Govern is already working to continue the program and expand its reach in future editions.
