The first event took place in June at Parc de la Mar in Palma, while yesterday’s second event was held at Port d’Andratx, attracting more than 400 participants of different ages. The event was supported by the Balearic federations for underwater activities, cycling, canoeing and sailing, as well as by the Club de Vela Puerto de Andratx, which provided the sailing support and collaborates with the institution.
This second family-oriented aquatic event organized by the Consell also offered a wide range of complementary activities, including diving, underwater photography, big paddleboarding, canoeing and sailing. It was also attended by Pollença canoeists Joan Toni Moreno and Maria Àngels Moreno as special guests, and they took part in one of the race categories.
The Mallorca Water Bike Circuit consists of a series of events designed to promote this new discipline, which combines cycling, through pedal-powered propulsion, and paddleboarding, through its flotation system. The activity is open to participants of all ages, from 12 years old or with a minimum height of 1.50 metres, and is divided into five categories: master, adult, cadet, children and promotion. The races take place on a marked course that participants must complete in the shortest possible time.
The presentation ceremony, held in the same area of Port d’Andratx where the activities took place, was attended by Pedro Bestard, second vice-president of the Consell de Mallorca and councillor for the Environment, Rural Affairs and Sport; island director Toni Prats; Andratx mayor Estefanía Gonzalvo; the municipality’s councillor for Sport and Tourism, Lluis Antoni Sieiro; and representatives of the collaborating sports federations: Juan Vargas (Balearic Federation of Underwater Activities), Toni Bauzá (Cycling Federation of the Balearic Islands), José Francisco Riudavets (Balearic Canoeing Federation), Cati Darder (Balearic Sailing Federation) and Juanjo Beltrán (Club de Vela del Puerto de Andratx).
Vice-President Bestard highlighted that “the Consell has made a pioneering commitment to this type of water bike, which combines the best of cycling and paddleboarding in a discipline that requires balance and technique. This year, we have incorporated it into our regular programme of workshops and active outings for young people and older adults, in addition to this three-race circuit, which is intended to become a major family sporting celebration.”
The event will return for a third meeting at Port d’Alcúdia in November.
