The second Spanish Olympic Sprint Cup in the junior and senior categories has elevated the paddlers from the Club Marítimo de Mahón, Alma Rabinerson and Claudia Vidal, to the elite level. They secured the overall bronze medal in the K2 500 meters in Pontevedra. The two athletes, who had already stood out in the national selection held on Thursday, May 22nd, are now ranked as the third-best K2 500 duo in Spain.

A total of 13 members from the Club Marítimo de Mahón took part in the competition held at the Pontillón Reservoir in Pontevedra, at the facilities of the Galician Canoeing Federation.

In the women’s senior category, Rabinerson and Vidal delivered the club’s standout result. Additionally, Cristina Carreras and Raquel Carbajo finished fifth in the B Final of the K2 500 meters. All four athletes from Mahón also competed together in the K4 500, achieving a fourth-place national finish. In the K1 event, Alma, who is awaiting news on whether she will be selected to represent Spain at the U23 European and World Championships, finished sixth in Spain, while Claudia placed fifth in the B Final, marking their best individual performances.

In the junior category, two paddlers represented the club. Ana Carreras and Djamila López. Djamila had a solid showing, placing 8th in the K1 200 meters B Final, ranking her 17th in Spain. Ana performed well in the time trials but did not reach the finals. In the 500 meters, both advanced to the C Final. Together in the K2 500, they finished second in the B Final, placing them 11th in Spain in this Olympic discipline.

In the individual men’s events, Joan Catchot, Isma Fuentes, David Sánchez, and Dion López competed. Only López advanced past the heats, but it wasn’t enough to reach the finals in a tightly contested competition that was decided by a photo finish.

In the K2 500 meters, the club’s pairs were Isaac Cordero–Joan Catchot, Isma Fuentes, David Sánchez, and Vinca Escandell, Dion López. All three pairs passed the heats and reached the C Final. The K4 team, formed by Escandell, Cordero, López, and Alexis Capdevila, narrowly missed the B Final by less than a tenth of a second, showing a strong performance.

The coaching staff of the Marítimo de Mahón Canoeing Club expressed great satisfaction with the national bronze medal, which reflects the excellent form of Alma and Claudia, as they now look ahead to the Spanish Championship.
