In the mixed 470 class, Mallorca’s Marta Cardona, from Club Nàutic s’Arenal, and Jordi Xammar (RCN Barcelona) climbed to third place overall after delivering a very consistent performance. The reigning world champions and winners just three weeks ago of the Trofeo Princesa Sofía Mallorca stood out with a third and a first place, results that clearly put them firmly in contention for a podium finish in a single fleet of 47 boats. Also in the Top 10 are Silvia Mas, also from CNA, and Alejandro de Maqua (CN El Balís), who are sixth after posting scores of 6 and 16. Paula Laiseca (RCN Gran Canaria), competing alongside Denmark’s Niklas Haberl, is in 31st place.
In the 49er class, the crew formed by Martín and Jaime Wizner (RCN Vigo) are another standout performers for the Spanish team, currently sitting fifth overall and just three points off the podium after a total of six races sailed, three on the first day and three more today. Final series begin today, Wednesday 22nd of April.
Helmsman Martín Wizner explained that “in the six races we’ve sailed so far, we’ve felt very good. Apart from one race in which we dropped back, in the rest we were fighting with the leading fleet, with good feelings and good speed, and seeing that the preseason work is paying off.” The Galician sailor added that “the new format makes the standings for the gold group very tight. We made it through with only five points, and that means everything will remain very open.”
Looking ahead to today, the third day of competition, Wizner noted that “strong winds are forecast, so it will be a very different day, already in the gold group and at a higher level. We’re eager to keep racing.”
Meanwhile, Pol and Àlex Marsans (CN Arenys de Mar), part of the 2032 program, are in 34th place.
In the 49er FX class, Patricia Suárez (RCN Vigo) and Melania Henke, from the Real Club Náutico de Palma, took a step forward and now sit in the provisional Top 10 of the women’s skiff, in ninth place, after a steady day (5-9-9).
In the men’s iQFOiL class, Nacho Baltasar, from Club Nàutic Sa Ràpita, is in 10th place after the four races completed yesterday by the fleet, while fellow Mallorcan Bernat Tomàs, from Club Nàutic s’Arenal, is 12th. In the women’s event, his clubmate and fellow member of the Spanish pre-Olympic team, Andrea Torres, climbs four places and now sits in 28th.
In the Nacra 17 class, Joan Cardona, from the Real Club Náutico de Palma, and Nicole Van der Velden remain in 26th place overall after three more races, while Dani and Nora García de la Casa (CN El Masnou), from the RFEV 2032 team, move up eight places to 28th.
In ILCA 7, Javier Seguí, from the Reial Club Nàutic del Port de Pollença, is the top Spanish sailor, ranked 26th. In ILCA 6, Marga Perelló, from the Real Club Náutico de Palma, is in 62nd place after three races sailed today.
The competition continues today, Wednesday 22nd of April, with the third day of an edition of French Olympic Week that brings together the international elite in the waters of Hyères.
The activity of the Royal Spanish Sailing Federation and its national teams, including the pre-Olympic team and the 2032 team, is made possible thanks to the support of a strong network of institutions and companies committed to sailing, the sport that has brought Spain the most Olympic gold medals.
The RFEV is sponsored by Iberdrola, Quirónprevención, and Loterías y Apuestas del Estado. Its institutional sponsors are the Higher Sports Council, the Spanish Olympic Committee, and Universo Mujer, together with the Port Authority of Santander and the Government of Cantabria (through the Ministry of Culture, Tourism and Sport, Deporte Cantabria, and the Regional Society for Culture and Sport). Its official providers are Azul Marino, Nippon Express, Murimar Seguros, Marinepool, and Enovis, while ADESP and World Sailing are institutional partners.
