This initiative has a clear purpose: to support the recovery of this essential plant for the Mediterranean ecosystem in an area that has been especially affected. Talamanca Bay, located barely two kilometres from Dalt Vila, has lost nearly 50% of its posidonia meadows in recent decades, making urgent action necessary to reverse the situation.
Posidonia oceanica plays a fundamental role in the balance of the Mediterranean Sea: it improves water quality, produces oxygen and provides shelter for numerous species. However, the decline of these meadows is one of the main threats to marine biodiversity.
With this project, Marina Ibiza is not only making a direct commitment to the local environment, but also taking a step further by actively involving its community. Alongside the initial planting, the marina will invite its clients, visitors and the wider public to take part in the initiative by acquiring their own posidonia plant, thereby helping this meadow grow collectively.
In this way, La Pradera de Posidonia Marina Ibiza becomes a participatory project that extends its impact beyond the initial action, encouraging direct involvement in the recovery of the marine ecosystem. Each new plant acquired will help expand the meadow and strengthen the bay’s resilience.
This action forms part of a broader context of Mediterranean conservation, where approximately 34% of posidonia meadows have been lost in recent decades. Initiatives like this help reverse that trend and move towards global marine protection goals.
The project also has the collaboration of the Vellmarí Association, led by marine biologist Manu San Félix, a leading figure in marine conservation in Ibiza, who will contribute his expertise in posidonia planting and monitoring.
“La Pradera de Posidonia Marina Ibiza” therefore represents a firm commitment to local environmental restoration, combining direct investment, scientific knowledge and public participation to recover, plant by plant, one of the Mediterranean’s most valuable ecosystems.
