Mallorca’s Maritime Museum reopens its doors

The insular institution assumes this way that the safety problems of the bade of the museum in Palma resolved, and creates, for the first time, a museum project to put Mallorca’s maritime patrimony into value.

Malloca’s Counselling reopens Mallorca’s Maritime Museum on Friday, October 3rd, after almost two years of being closed due to safety reasons. The vicepresident of Malloca’s Counselling and councillor of Culture and Patrimony, Antònia Roca, has celebrated today, October 1st, that all the safety problems of the base of Palma’s museum have been resolved, for the first time, and that a museum project to put Mallorca’s maritime patrimony into value has been created.

Roca has reminded that it has been two years of very intense work to solve all the security problems that presented the base of the museum in Ses Voltes: «there was no evacuation plan, the fire detection systems did not work, the hoses against fire were not connected and water did not reach the pipes of the area», has signaled the vicepresident and councillor.

The inauguration and reopening party of the museum will be celebrated this Friday at 6 p.m. in Ses Voltes, and will have a concert with Pere Andreo, a popular dance with Antic Cofre and a great ‘fideuà’ prepared by the Balearic Federation of Fishmongers Confraternity. «The museum had not been a safe place for over three years, but now, thanks to the effort of the last months we have resolved a situation that puts thousands of visitors every year at risk. Now we reopen Ses Voltes with guarantees and a museum project that focuses on innovation, inclusion and sharing maritime patrimony», has explained Roca.

The permanent exposition is distributed in five exposition rooms and an educational space, with audiovisual resources that offer an immersive experience for all the public, has explained today the vicepresident and councillor Roca. The project is based on three main themed axis: the preservation of subaquatic maritime and terrestrial patrimony, marine biodiversity and the creation of a space for reflection and debating about contemporary topics related with the sea.

The museum shows a new rich archeological piece collection ordinary from subaquatic fields, naval models and objects linked to traditional sea professions, all complemented with audiovisual and interactive resources.

It is important to highlight that IB3 has contributed to the permanent museumization of the Museu Marítim de Mallorca through an assignment of over 200 minutes of audiovisual content related to traditional Mallorcan cuisine. The videos proceed from programs such as  Això és mel, Cuina amb Santi Taura, Gent de la mar, Fred i calent and Uep! Com anam?, and include recipes such as sea calluses, fish rice, filled fish, fish lasagna with spinach, amberjack noodles, rabbit with onions and lobster, ray with ‘sobrasada’ and the cuttlefish ‘pica-pica’. This audiovisual content reinforces the link between the sea and the local gastronomy, and offer visitors an immersive cultural experience.

One of the main strengths of the new project is the commitment with accessibility. The texts have been elaborated into an easy read and validated by the Cognitive Accessibility Office CLARA. In addition, the museum has Braille panels, QR codes with audiodescriptions and sign language, as well as systems that are compatible with cochlear implants for guided visits.

Accessibility and signalization has also been adapted to guarantee that any person can enjoy the cultural experience in a space that is declared as a Place of Cultural Interest (BIC).

The reopening of the Maritime Museum of Mallorca means a step forwards in the preservation and diffusion of the maritime legacy of the island. «We want the museum to be a meeting place for Majorcans, but also a space of reference for all of those who visit us and wish to learn the historical and alive connection that Mallorca keeps with the sea», has concluded Roca.
