Mallorca’s Council moves forward with the recovery of the Roman ship at ses Fontanelles

The Mallorca Island Council has launched a tender for the machinery and equipment needed to ensure the safe extraction of the Roman ship.

The Consell de Mallorca continues to make progress on the recovery project of the Roman shipwreck at ses Fontanelles with the tendering of a supply contract for the machinery, infrastructure and equipment required to guarantee the proper extraction of the vessel and its subsequent storage for conservation and desalination processes. Companies interested in submitting bids have until February 9 to do so.

This action represents a key phase within the comprehensive project aimed at the protection, study and valorisation of one of the most significant underwater archaeological sites in the western Mediterranean, dated to the 4th century AD.

The supply contract has been structured into four separate lots in order to facilitate the participation of a greater number of companies and to ensure more efficient execution of the works. Lot 1 covers equipment for the conservation and desalination of the remains, such as pools, water tanks, misting systems and working platforms; Lot 2 includes tents to be used for work prior to immersing the wooden elements; Lot 3 comprises auxiliary machinery needed for transport and sediment removal; and Lot 4 refers to the floating infrastructure that will support the machinery during the extraction operations.

The maximum total budget for the contract amounts to €69,078.65 (VAT included). Of this total, €30,709.39 is allocated to Lot 1; €20,332.17 to Lot 2; €6,782.64 to Lot 3; and €11,254.43 to Lot 4.

The ses Fontanelles project has the endorsement of the international scientific community and is being carried out under strict technical and conservation criteria. At the same time, the Mallorca Island Council is preparing an exhibition that will bring the results of the research and the historical value of the Roman ship closer to the public. The exhibition will be held at La Misericòrdia in the coming months.
