Mallorca’s Council president, Llorenç Galmés, has pointed out that “this initiative will be developed in a continued way with the objective of achieving the objectives of showing society the wealth of the island’s maritime patrimony”.
Galmés has also pointed out that the sea is an essential part of the identity of Mallorca: “the island has built its history around fishing and the sea. This campaign serves to keep the sailor patrimony alive and guarantee that the future generations know this legacy and, at the same time, encourages a fishing that respects the temporality and contributes to preserving biodiversity”.
For the development of this initiative, there has been the support of Sant Pere de Palma’s Confraternity of Fishmongers, the Spanish Institute of Oceanography, the CSIC and the Planet Tuna project.
The director of the Maritime Museum of Mallorca, Albert Forés, emphasized the scientific accuracy of the content and the campaign’s clear educational purpose: “This calendar, which provides detailed information about the fish and seafood of the Balearic Sea, is essential for bringing maritime culture closer to both students and the general public. It helps identify the best time to enjoy each species, respect their natural cycles, and promote sustainable consumption.”
Additionally, the guide aims to help end consumers identify Mediterranean marine species in local markets and shops. It includes examples that allow users to recognize the most representative species and appreciate their qualities: oily fish, such as tuna and dolphinfish (llampuga), rich in omega-3; white fish, such as John Dory and red mullet, known for their low fat content; crustaceans, such as prawns and lobster, known for their intense flavor, especially in summer; and cephalopods, such as octopus, cuttlefish, and squid, which are excellent sources of protein, particularly in autumn and spring. Also included is the Mediterranean sand eel (jonquillo), known for its delicate and distinctive flavor, typical of winter and the early spring months, among other species.
The campaign’s graphic materials were designed with illustrations by Flavia Gargiulo Rosa and texts by María López. The different pieces are intended to be distributed in schools, local markets, fishmongers, and shops across the island, with the aim of raising awareness about the importance of preserving the marine environment and traditional fishing practices.
