Mallorcan Tim Lubat achieves silver at ILCA 7 Spain’s Cup

Mallorcan Tim Lubat, from Real Club Náutico de Palma, has achieved the second place of the general after taking part in the races program of the competition.

The bay of Altea hosted ILCA 7 Spain’s Cup, with the participation of 49 sailors of 12 communities. Amongst them there were the members of the preolympic team of the Spanish Royal Sailing Federation (RFEV) -except for Joel Rodríguez- and the promises of the 2032 strategic project.

The local sailor Gonzalo Suárez (CN Altea) was crowned champion after a brilliant performance that finished on Sunday, September 21st, with two consecutive victories in the last races.

The meteorological conditions were optimum during the whole weekend, what allowed fulfilling the full race program. The competition kicked off on Friday 19th with a southeast wind of seven knots that was stable during the whole session, allowing the Committee to complete three first races.

After the first race, Murcian Fernando Abella was at the front of the provisional general with very regular partials (3-4-6) and 13 points of advantage over Marc O’Connor (9-2-3, RCN Palma) and Javier Seguí (4-5-5, RCN Port de Pollença), both tied at 14 points.

The second journey, which took place on Saturday, was marked by somewhat variable conditions and for the necessity of keeping the regularity of not staying unhooked.

Sunday was decisive. With three races to take place and everything to be decided, the bay of Altea offered a perfect scenery: more generous wind and ideal conditions. Gonzalo Suárez took advantage of his knowledge about the regattas area to sign two first places and consolidate his comeback. With 43 points in the final qualifying, the 24-year-old sailor took the national title before the applause of the numerous local public and the technical team of hir club.

The podium was completed by Tim Lubat, of the Real Club Náutico de Palma, second with 46 points, and Fernando Abella, third with 49 points.

Regarding the rest of the preolympic team, Javier Seguí (RCN Port de Pollença) was fifth absolute and U21 fourth; Adolfo Virgili (RCR Alicante) was sixth; Leo Barreto (RCN Tenerife) finished in the seventh place; and the current U19 world runner-up, Karol Krupski (CV Port Andraxt) was eighth absolute and U21 fifth. The members of the 2032 project Viktor Kateliev (RCN Gran Canaria) and David Ponseti (RCN Palma), were 12th and 13th absolute, respectively, being U21 eighth and ninth.

The RFEV preolympic team is subsidized by the Superior Council of Sports, the Spanish Olympic Committee and Universo Mujer, and sponsored by Iberdrola and Quirónprevención. Azul Marino, Murimar Seguros, Nippon Express, Marinepool and Enovis are official providers.
