After the fourth day of racing, marking the first day of the final series, the Spanish duo is tied on points with their closest rivals. Silvia Mas, also from Club Nàutic s’Arenal, and Alejandro de Maqua continue their strong progress and are now just six points away from the top ten.
Three races were held on the first day of the final series, in demanding wind conditions. Xammar and Cardona posted results of 2-3-10, with the last race becoming their discard. Their main rivals, Great Britain's Hannah Bristow and James Taylor, kept pace with scores of 1-5-5. Upon returning to shore, the Race Committee imposed a one-point penalty per race on Xammar and Cardona for failing to attend the provisional podium bib ceremony held the morning of June 12th. The Spanish team filed a protest, explaining the reasons why both sailors could not attend the ceremony and arguing that the three-point penalty was disproportionate, but their appeal was dismissed.
As a result, the Catalan-Mallorcan crew maintains the overall lead, but is now tied on points with the British team and holds just a one-point advantage over the third-place Germans, Simon Diesch and Anna Markfort.
Silvia Mas and Alejandro de Maqua recorded results of 19-8-12, allowing them to climb one spot in the standings to twelfth place. They are only six points away from the top ten, which will qualify for Saturday’s Medal Race, making today’s racing, June 13, crucial for the new Catalan duo, who had only sailed together for a week before the championship began.
Today’s World Championship schedule includes three more races in the final series. The top ten will earn the privilege of competing in Saturday’s Medal Race, the final day of this world championship in Poland.
