The Spaniards Jordi Xammar and Marta Cardona, a sailor from Club Nàutic s'Arenal, have secured the Friday, 16th of May, the gold medal at the 470 Mixed European Championship, which has taken place in Split (Croatia), since the Medal Race from Saturday, 17th of May, has not been celebrated.

The Catalan-Mallorcan fleet has led the Championship since day 1, on the 12th of May. Over six days of competition and 12 races with very diverse wind and wave conditions in Croatian waters, the new European champions achieved four first-place finishes, four seconds, a third, a fourth, and a sixth, along with a discard.

Joining Xammar and Cardona at the top of the podium were the British duo Wrigley and Harris in second place, who had won the previous Princess Sofia Trophy. The French team of Matisse Pacaud and Lucie De Gennes completed the podium.

"We're very happy," said Jordi Xammar. “It’s been a very tough and complete championship. We completed the full race schedule and sailed in all kinds of conditions, so it's very satisfying to have won with such a margin against such a competitive fleet, especially considering we've only been sailing together for 40 days. Marta has worked incredibly hard since we decided to team up, and her progress has been amazing.”

"It’s been a very long championship and we’ve had to work really hard," added Marta Cardona. “It was a solid victory, but we can’t lose focus. We need to keep working because there are still areas where we need to improve, and the World Championship is less than a month away.”

Jordi Xammar (Barcelona, 1993) won bronze at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games alongside Nicolás Rodríguez and finished fourth with Nora Brugman at the Paris 2024 Games, which were his third Olympics. In the senior 470 World Championships, he has earned four medals: bronze in 2018, silver in 2019, another bronze in 2021, and gold in 2024. In the European Championships, the continental title with Marta Cardona marks his sixth podium finish, following bronze in 2017, three silvers in 2019, 2021, and 2022, and the 2024 gold.

Sailing with fellow Mallorcan Maria Perelló in the 420 class (the smaller sibling of the 470), Marta Cardona (Palma, 2005) was crowned World and European Champion in 2021, and in 2022 she won gold at the Youth Sailing World Championship and silver at the World Championship. After competing in the 49er FX class, she transitioned to the mixed 470 in December following Nora Brugman’s retirement from Olympic sailing.
