On one hand, the Catalan Jordi Xammar will defense alongside his new partner, Mallorcan Marta Cardona, young promise of Club Nàutic s’Arenal, the World’s gold that he accomplished last year. On the other hand, the catalan Silvia Mas, also from Club Nàutic s’Arenal, competes alongside her new partner, Alejandro de Maqua.
A total of 49 crews will be on the line of departure of the World’s Champ this Monday, and between them there are challenging competitors such as Brits Martin Wrigley and Bettine Harris, los the German Simon Diesch and Anna Markfort and the Olympian champion of Paris 2024 Lara Vadlau, who now has passed to the position of patron alongside Niklas Haberl as the new crewmate.
Xammar and Cardona arrive at this important event with the confidence granted by their recent European Championship title, achieved with admirable superiority after having shared a boat for only 40 days. The Catalan-Mallorcan crew has been training all week in Gdynia, in the Gulf of Gdansk, on the Baltic Sea.
“The Gdynia racecourse is quite different from the one we had at the European Championship in Croatia,” Cardona noted. “The conditions are very variable; we can have sea wind and rather dirty land wind, so we’ve been training to get the most out of the racecourse and arrive as well-prepared as possible. It’s going to be a very competitive fleet, and the week has to go right, but we’re going to give it our all to be on the podium. If we do things well and stay focused, we can achieve it.”
Jordi Xammar already boasts four medals at the 470 World Championships: bronze in 2018, silver in 2019, another bronze in 2021, and last year’s gold, achieved with Nora Brugman.
Meanwhile, Silvia Mas, affiliated with Club Nàutic s'Arenal, debuts Alejandro de Maqua as crew member at this world event. The new Catalan duo faces a process of adaptation and mutual understanding. De Maqua, born in 2004, was the 420 World Champion in 2023 and comes from sailing in the 49er class.
The World Championship program includes five races in the qualifying series and six in the final series, with the fleet divided into gold and silver groups, plus the Medal Race for the top ten. The championship begins this Monday, June 9, and will conclude on Saturday, June 14th, when the new mixed 470 world champions will be crowned.
