Mallorca achieves four medals in Europe’s 420 Championship

Young Mallorcans Amalia Coll, from Club Nàutic s’Arenal, and Laia Mattos, from Club Marítimo San Antonio de la Playa, have been crowned female champions of Europe in Under17 category, two weeks after having achieved the World’s title.

The 420 national team has achieved four medals in Europe’s 420 Championship, which ended yesterday, on July 27th, in waters of Matosinhos (Portugal) after six competition journeys with challenging winds. The Mallorcan crews have shone with their own light: Amalia Coll, from Club Nàutic s’Arenal, and Laia Mattos, from Club Marítimo San Antonio de la Playa, have been crowned female champions of Europe in Under17 category, Lucas and Nico Montoya, both from Club Nàutic s’Arenal, have achieved continental silver in the male absolute category, Neus Fernández and Martina Gomila, both from Club Nàutic s’Arenal, have been Europe’s runner-ups and Nicola Sadler, from Club Nàutic s’Arenal, and Susana Bestard, from Real Club Náutico de Palma, have climbed up to the third place of the female podium.

In the Under17 fleet, in which 77 crews competed, Amalia Coll (Club Náutico Arenal) and Laia Mattos (Club Marítimo San Antonio de la Playa) have been crowned female champions of Europe a few weeks after having achieved the female Under17 World’s title in Turkey. In their first year in the category, the Balearics have finalized in tenth position of the general list and second in female, after the Northamerican Anna Ulmer and Marin Redmond, who did not get the continental title.

In the open fleet, with 128 male and mixed teams, the fifth place of the general of Lucas and Nico Montoya (Club Náutico Arenal) validated them to proclaim themselves runner-ups of Europe in the male category, overcome by eight points by the Greek Sokratis Chamarras and Iason Xypas.

In the female absolute classification,  Neus Fernández Darder and Martina Gomila Darder (Club Náutico Arenal) have achieved the continental silver medal, which adds to the female World champions title, achieved in Turkey on July 9th. The Darder cousins finished seventh in the general, a place in front of Nicola Sadler (Club Náutico Arenal) and Susana Bestard (Real Club Náutico de Palma), who took female bronze. Another Greek pair, the one formed by Dimitra Peleki and Fevronia Bouzana, have been crowned Europe’s champions, with a second in the absolute general classification.

These four podiums in Europe’s 420 Champions are summed up to the three medals that the teams of the Royal Spanish Sailing Federation achieved in the World Champs, which took place in Urla (Turkey) less than 20 days ago. Therefore, in addition to the female World titles for the Darder (in absolute category) and for Amalia Coll and Laia Mattos (in Under27), the Catalan-Canary duo formed by Bruno García and Isabel Laiseca took bronze in the absolute mixed category.

The 420 European category has been developed for six journeys in Matosinhos, in the north of Portugal, and has been decided in 12 tests, six of the series qualifying and six of the final series. The delegation of the Royal Spanish Sailing Federation has been formed by a total of 18 crews.

The Royal Spanish Sailing Federation is aided by the Superior Council of Sports, the Spanish Olympic Committee and Universo Mujer, and sponsored by Iberdrola, Quirón Prevención and State’s Lotteries and Biddings.
