Los Gallos will compete for the 2025 SailGP title in Abu Dhabi

The team led by Diego Botín arrives to the last great race of the championship with only four points from reaching the podium and need a perfect weekend to defend the title conquered last year at San Francisco.

A year and a half after their incredible victory in the Great Final of Rolex SailGP's season 4, the Spanish team travels to Abu Dhabi to experience another exciting weekend, with everything to be decided in the most spectacular on water competition of the world. In this occassion, the fight is even more complicated. Los Gallos will look for the epic one in the capital of the Arab Emirates to revalidate their champions' title.

For that, the team led by Diego Botín needs a perfect weekend. It is only valid to win in waters of the Persian Gulf and hope for Australia, New Zealand or Great Britains to not perform to their best level. At the lack of just seven fleet races, Spain is fourth in the overall qualifying of the Rolex SailGP Championship, four points behinf the Bonds Flying Roos. At six there are the Black Foils -second on the table-, while the Emirates GBR leads the league with nine points more than ours.

“Spain is the worst rival we could have”, Tom Slingbsy points out

The rivals of the Spaniards know, however, that Los Gallos are capable of anything, especially after winning last season when everything seemed to be against them, when no one bid for them. But, in addition, Spain knows how to perform well in Abu Dhabi. Without going further, the last course, Los Gallos SailGP Team were second in Abu Dhabi, while Australians and Brits finished seventh and eighth, respectively. A similar qualifying result to Los Gallos for the Great Final of the 2025 season. There are reasons to dream.

And Tom Slingsby knows that very well, three-times champion of the Rolex Sail Championship. The pilot of the Bonds Flying Roos has pointed out in a press release: “Spain is made for this type of moments. It is the world rival we could have stepping on our tail. Last year Peter and I were already nagegd in San Francisco's Great Final”.

On his behalf, Diego Botín, pilot of the Spanish team of SailGP, has comemented: “Now we can only look forward. This weekend we will go with everything. The regattas area and conditions should also play in our favor. It is a small track with little wind where anything can happen”.
