Los Gallos return to action at the Canadian Grand Prix

The Spain SailGP Team sits in fourth place in the standings of the Rolex SailGP Championship, with 32 points, two fewer than the United States led by Taylor Canfield.

As Sylvester Stallone said in one of the iconic films from the Rocky saga, “you have to endure without stopping; that’s how you win.” Spain is holding on to that motto to leave behind the ghosts of Perth and New York and get back on track in the Rolex SailGP Championship. The team helmed by Diego Botín made it very clear on their social media: “We Gallos are capable of anything,” they said, referencing another of the American boxer’s famous lines.

The Spain SailGP Team arrives in Halifax (Saturday 20 and Sunday 21 June, on Deportes via Movistar Plus+; outside Spain, on SailGP’s official YouTube channel) with some doubts after what happened at the last New York Grand Prix, where a technical failure prevented them from competing on waters where they had won the previous season. It is not the first setback of the year. In January, during the build-up to the opening event of the 2026 season (Perth), Spain suffered another breakdown in the F50 and were again unable to fight for points that weekend.

If it weren’t for both incidents, the situation of Los Gallos in the Rolex SailGP Championship would look very different (they are currently fourth with 32 points, two behind the United States of Taylor Canfield), but things are as they are. “You can’t go around saying you’re not where you wanted to be because of him, her, or anyone else. That’s what cowards do.”

The positive side is that, so far, the Spain SailGP Team has reached the final in every Grand Prix they have competed in this season. A statistic that invites optimism, points to the path forward in the second half of the year, and confirms that the Spanish team is one of the strongest in the championship.

In that group are also the Australia SailGP Team, dominant in recent months; the aforementioned United States; and the Great Britain SailGP Team led by Dylan Fletcher. This weekend in Halifax, they are joined by New Zealand SailGP Team, returning to competition after the severe crash in Auckland. Now more than ever: go Gallos.
