Lifeguards in the Balearic Islands demand better working conditions

Lifeguards across the Balearic Islands will gather today, Wednesday, October 22nd, to demand “decent working conditions” that ensure safety on the region’s beaches.

According to the Mallorca Lifeguards Union, the demonstration will take place at 6:00 p.m. in Plaza de España, Palma.

The main demand, as stated by the lifeguard unions of Mallorca and Ibiza, is the approval of a new collective bargaining agreement for the sector that includes a pay rise to recover “the economic losses caused by years of abuse.”

They are also calling for wages that reflect the high cost of living in the Balearic Islands, noting that current salaries “do not even cover rent or basic necessities”, as well as the inclusion of a hazard allowance and pay increases based on seniority.

In addition, they are requesting that the agreement address basic travel needs for lifeguards, particularly those working on smaller islands or in rural areas, and that it include a reduction of the working week to 36 hours, with a maximum of eight hours per day.

Union sections affiliated with the CGT have also stressed the need for improved psychological support, early detection of melanoma, mandatory and periodic training, the elimination of the “abusive” transitional clause, early retirement options, and paid sick leave.

“We’re not fighting just for ourselves. We’re fighting for our dignity, for the dignity of residents, and for a quality service that ensures safety on our beaches. A dignified sector means a dignified service for everyone,” the unions stated on social media.

Since launching an indefinite strike in late September, Balearic lifeguards have held a series of protests, demonstrations, and awareness-raising actions across the islands.
