Lifeguards in Mallorca denounce shortcomings in infrastructure and equipment along the coastline

The Unión Socorristas Mallorca union protested this Thursday, May 28th, to demand more equipment and better infrastructure in the face of what they described as the “neglect and excuses” of the Palma City Council.

They held a demonstration both in Plaça de Cort and at the municipal plenary session, where they intervened to publicly voice their complaints.

The lifeguards have warned that if improvements are not made, they will go on strike on June 23rd and 24th. “We will not go down to the beach, even if minimum service levels are imposed, because safety is not being taken seriously,” they said in a message on social media.

The union has called for “public and safe” beaches and a “decent” service. According to one of their representatives during the plenary session, Cala Estància is “a symbol of neglect and incompetence,” as it lacks, among other things, a facility to provide first aid care and an accessible restroom.

He also noted that the hut located in Ciudad Jardín is at risk of collapse and is the only available space to store equipment. He further claimed that there is no installed buoy marking system and no public toilets.

“Do you think a five-kilometer-long beach, with 120 hotels operating and thousands of users every day, does not deserve public restrooms? Or is it that tourists have hotels nearby and citizens only matter when they go to vote?” he said during the plenary session.

The lifeguards are thus maintaining their strike call for June 23rd and 24th, leaving its cancellation in the hands of the mayor, Jaime Martínez, and the responsible councillor, Llorenç Bauzá. “They are responsible for managing the city and have chosen to look the other way while residents remain unprotected,” they concluded.
