The fifth edition of La Larga came to a close at the Real Club Náutico de Palma (RCNP), marking the official start of the 21st Sandberg PalmaVela. After “Trifork” arrived on Sunday, April 27, just before 5:00 p.m., the remaining 34 teams continued racing overnight, with the final boat crossing the finish line at nearly six in the morning—over 37 hours of sailing.
The wind was undoubtedly one of the main players. Over more than 200 miles of course, the fleet encountered a variety of conditions, from winds over 15 knots in the early hours toward Ibiza to a gentle breeze near Cabrera, forcing teams to give their all to reach the final mandatory waypoint in Porto Colom.
In the IRC class, “Trifork” (RCNP) completed La Larga in 24h 34m 52s—enough for Joern Larsen’s crew to win both in real and corrected time, with nearly two and a half hours of margin. The Polish “R6” by Robert Szustkowski (Polish YC) placed second, while “Spirit of Lorina” by Jean Pierre Barjon (YCF) took third.
In ORC 0, victory went to “Azahar” by Herve Grunig. The Swan 56 from CVP Andratx/YCF crossed the finish line in Palma Bay just after 5:00 a.m. today, with a 25-minute advantage over “Blue Vision” by Ersu Enis (Puerto Portals) after time correction. Rounding out the podium was “Caveman IV” by Frans Van Dijk (RCNP).
The ORC 1 division was tighter. After more than 37 hours of racing, “Xummer” by Ruud Van Es (Bruinisse) claimed victory with just a 16-minute lead over “Vertigo” by Robert in den Haak, who came second. Third place went to “Aviador” by Gabriel Medem (RCM Sotogrande).
Among the fleet completing the 185-mile course, one of the first to cross the finish line just after midnight was ORC 2-3 class winner “Alegría” by Pit Fins (DYC). Following were “Gudrun VIII” by Diego Colón (RCNP) and “Kine” by Seac McCarter, second and third respectively.
In ORC 4-5, “Indigo” by Pedro Siquer was the winner of La Larga. The CN Arenal crew finished an hour and fifteen minutes after “Mestral Fast” by Jaime Morell (RCNP), but claimed the final victory thanks to time compensation.
In A2 division 0-2, where teams race with only two crew members, the victory went to “Modul” by Félix Comas (CN Santa Ponsa). “Smerit” by Tito Moure (CV Blanes) and “HM Hospitales-Hyatt” by Óscar Chaves (CN el Balís) placed second and third, respectively.
Lastly, in A2 3-5, the winner was “Guaguanco IV” by Thierry Lallemand (CN Altea), who recently won the overall title in the XII Volta a Mallorca A3. “Yellow Rose” by Marten Jan Ringers (YV Scheveningen) and “Diabolic” by Glenn de Brouwer (Royal Belgian SC) followed in second and third place.
The trophy ceremony will take place today, Tuesday, April 29, at 7:00 p.m. on the club's main terrace.
