In its first year, a pioneering initiative has successfully restored 600 square meters of a UNESCO World Heritage marine natural park, aiming to revive Posidonia oceanica seagrass meadows, a vital marine ecosystem. The ultimate goal is to restore 45.000 Posidonia plants across 2.5 hectares over a three-year period.
The project is led by the Vellmarí Association, founded by Manu San Félix, marine biologist, award-winning underwater photographer, and National Geographic Explorer, with the support of the MSC Foundation.
San Félix emphasized the importance of this support, stating it is “crucial to reaching thousands of people and spreading the urgent message of restoring our beloved sea.”
Marina Anselme, Secretary General of the MSC Foundation, highlighted the vital role of seagrass meadows, describing them as “the silent heroes of the ocean: complex, fragile, and essential.”
This effort is part of the foundation’s broader campaign to promote marine conservation, education, and ocean literacy in the Mediterranean, under the Mission Blue Hope Spot Champion initiative.
