The bay of Portmany will host, from October 3rd to 5th, the Ibiza Wingfoil Open (IWO), which will have the modality of Spain’s Cup for wingfol racing. For the event, a maximum of 80 specialists are expected, the majority coming from the country, even though some European athletes have already confirmed their assistance. The inscriptions are open, for a weekend of an extraordinarily singular competition, in which the competitors won’t get out of the beach, as usual, but they will go in boats until finding the most favorable wind area for the competition.

Wingfoil or wingboarding was born in 2016 and constitutes an spectacular hybrid modality between windsurf foil and formula kite, where the body of the athlete transmits the eolic energy to the foil-table to put it into operation. The equipment is divided in three parts: the wing, the table and the hydrofoil, which provoques the unfolding of the water table, achieving great velocities. In fact, the competitors go out equipped with helmets and impact vests. It is not an easy modality if we compare it with windsurf, but it is really attractive once one takes flight. This sports experiments a non-stoppable growth worldwide, to which with not doubt, contributes its logistic simplicity, since the equipment occupies very little space and is easily built.

The wind range that is needed also positions it in front of other modalities such as kite or funboard. In enclaves such as Tarifa, Fuerteventura or Roses’s bay, the presence of wings starts overpowering the rest and the phenomenon has also arrived to Ibiza, where the number of athletes increases year after year.

The Club Nàutic Sant Antoni, that organized the event along the Royal Spanish Sailing Federation, has been promoting this modality for some years and has carried out multiple training activities and regattas. The new nautical centre, that the entity will inaugurate in 2026, will be the reference spot in the island, in which this sport and other wind sports will be promoted too.

The origin of IWO has to be placed 4 years ago, when a company of events suggested to the CNSA the organization of one of their circuit tests and they accepted. However, during the organizational process some doubts regarding the competition area arose, given the fact that the orographic configuration of Sant Antoni, very attractive for a lot of nautical and sporting activities, did not adapt to the nature of the test. Facing this difficulty and the excitement to keep up with an event of such scope, the idea of using a nautical ferry to take the participants to the inside area with best wind of the bay arose, and it worked to perfection, avoiding  other traffic zones and vessels’ influx and giving visibility, fun and security to the competition. Last year, 70 specialists from all over the country participated.
