II Setmana Blava grows in the Balearics with more students, more schools and a month of activities

The activities will take place from May 18th to June 18th and will be free for all fifth- and sixth-grade primary school students.

The Government of the Balearic Islands presented today, Thursday, March 19th, the 2nd Setmana Blava at an event held at the Club Náutico Ca’n Pastilla, attended by the Minister of the Sea and Water Cycle, Juan Manuel Lafuente; the Director General of Early Childhood, Diversity Support and Educational Improvement, Neus Riera; the Director General of Ports and Maritime Transport, Toni Mercant; the Director General of Sports, Joan Toni Ramonell; the manager of Ports of the Balearic Islands (PortsIB), Kico Villalonga; and the president of the Association of Yacht Clubs of the Balearic Islands, Antoni Estades.

This year, the program has 5,723 registered students from 100 schools, a figure that represents a significant increase compared to the 3,382 participants from 91 schools in the previous edition. To facilitate organization for schools, the activities can be carried out over an entire month, from May 18 to June 18. In addition, the Ministry of the Sea and Water Cycle will cover the transportation costs for participants, which will be free for students.

The initiative aims to encourage the practice of nautical sports, promote maritime culture, and raise awareness among young people about protecting the marine environment, while also promoting healthy lifestyle habits. The program combines practical nautical activities, uch as sailing, canoeing, and kayaking, with educational workshops on the environment, sea safety, and basic navigation knots, led by specialized instructors.

During the presentation, Minister Lafuente highlighted that “Setmana Blava is an example of the Government’s commitment to bringing maritime culture closer to young people and fostering respect for the marine environment.” He also emphasized that “this year we are consolidating this initiative by extending its duration to facilitate school organization and allow more students to participate, with transportation also free of charge.”

The program is promoted by the Government of the Balearic Islands through the Ministries of the Sea and Water Cycle; Education and Universities; and Tourism, Culture and Sports, as well as Ports of the Balearic Islands, with the collaboration of the Balearic Sailing Federation and the Balearic Canoeing Federation. In this second edition, 25 yacht clubs and marinas from across the archipelago are participating.

Setmana Blava had an initial introduction during the GOIB Showcase, organized for the Day of the Balearic Islands, where the Balearic Sailing Federation held sailing demonstrations on the lake at Parc de la Mar. Hundreds of families and children took part, helping to spark interest among young people and establish the initiative as a tool for raising awareness and promoting nautical sports.
